The Universal Language
When you travel or work in a new factory, you might not speak the local language. However, there is one language that is universal all around the world: safety symbols. These signs are mandatory in workplaces to protect people from serious hazards.
Instead of reading long warnings, you must use cognitive scanning to quickly recognize the shape and color of a sign. For example, a yellow triangle always means caution or warning, like when a liquid is flammable or toxic.
Colors are just as important as shapes. A red circle with a line through it means an action is completely prohibited. A solid blue circle means you must wear or do something (like washing your hands). Finally, a green square always shows you a safe condition, like where to find an exit or a first aid kit in an emergency.
