Professional Tone
Academic and professional writing requires objectivity, precision, and formality. It is not about using the biggest words!
1. Formality 🚫
Never use contractions (don't, can't) or casual vocabulary (kids, stuff) in academic writing. Use formal equivalents, including formal verbs instead of phrasal verbs.
2. Objectivity ⚖️
Academic writing is about evidence, not your personal feelings. Avoid first/second person pronouns (I, me, my, you, we) unless specifically requested.
➔ This suggests that... (ជំនួស "ខ្ញុំគិតថា" ដោយ "ចំណុចនេះសបញ្ជាក់ថា...")
➔ A difference can be observed... (ប្រើប្រយោគ Passive ដើម្បីលុបបំបាត់ការបញ្ចេញឈ្មោះបុគ្គល "We")
3. Hedging 🛡️
In academia, nothing is 100% certain. Avoid absolute words like "always", "never", or "proves". Use "softening" words to show caution.
➔ This indicates/suggests that... (កុំប្រើពាក្យ "បញ្ជាក់១០០%" ត្រូវប្រើ "បង្ហាញឲ្យឃើញថា")
➔ Social media may contribute to depression. (បន្ថែមពាក្យ "អាចនឹង" ដើម្បីបញ្ចៀសការអះអាងដាច់ខាត)
4. Nominalization 🧱
Academic writing packs a lot of information into single sentences by turning verbs and adjectives into nouns.
➔ Their quick reaction saved lives. (ប្តូរ "ពួកគេមានប្រតិកម្មលឿន" ទៅជា "ប្រតិកម្មដ៏លឿនរបស់ពួកគេ...")
➔ The instability of the system caused errors. (ប្តូរគុណនាម "មិនមានលំនឹង" ទៅជានាម "ភាពមិនមានលំនឹង")
Don't use complex words just to sound smart.
The heavy rainfall caused flooding. ✅

Recent Questions
Generally, you should avoid it to maintain objectivity. However, in modern academic writing (especially in humanities), it is sometimes acceptable in the Introduction ("In this essay, I will argue...") or when detailing your specific methodology ("I conducted interviews..."). But avoid "I think" or "I believe"! 📝
Is "formal" the same as "academic"?
Not quite! A business letter is "formal" (polite, no slang), but it isn't "academic." Academic writing requires formal language PLUS evidence, hedging, nominalization, and objective analysis. 🎓💼
Is passive voice always better in academic writing?
It is a great tool for staying objective ("Mistakes were made" instead of "I made mistakes"), but don't overuse it! Too much passive voice makes your writing heavy and boring to read. Mix it with clear, active sentences! ⚖️
Can I ever use the word "I" in academic writing?
