Emphatic Structures

At the C1 level, we don't just state facts. We use syntax to highlight the most critical part of our message for maximum impact.

Wh- Clefts

What + Subject + Verb + is / was + Focus

What I mean is we need more time. អ្វីដែលខ្ញុំចង់មានន័យគឺ យើងត្រូវការពេលវេលាបន្ថែម។

What she did was resign immediately. អ្វីដែលនាងបានធ្វើគឺ លាឈប់ភ្លាមៗតែម្តង។ (សង្កត់ធ្ងន់លើសកម្មភាពលាឈប់)

រចនាសម្ព័ន្ធ "It is/was..." (បញ្ជាក់ចំៗទៅលើនរណាម្នាក់ ឬអ្វីមួយ)

It is / was + Focus + that / who + rest of sentence

It was Dara who solved the issue. គឺដារ៉ានេះហើយ ដែលជាអ្នកដោះស្រាយបញ្ហានេះ។ (មិនមែនអ្នកផ្សេងទេ)

It is the price that worries me. គឺតម្លៃនេះហើយ ដែលធ្វើឲ្យខ្ញុំបារម្ភ។

Emphatic Do/Did

ប្រើ do/does/did ដើម្បីបញ្ជាក់អះអាង (ទោះជាស្របក៏ដោយ)

Subject + do / does / did + Base Verb

I do realize the risk involved. ខ្ញុំពិតជាដឹងពីហានិភ័យដែលពាក់ព័ន្ធមែន។ (បញ្ជាក់ថាដឹងមែនទែន)

She did call you yesterday. នាងពិតជាបានតេទៅអ្នកកាលពីម្សិលមិញមែន។

Negative Inversion

បញ្រ្ចាសទម្រង់ប្រយោគ ពេលពាក្យបដិសេធនៅខាងមុខ

Negative Word + Auxiliary + Subject + Verb

Rarely have I seen such dedication. កម្រណាស់ដែលខ្ញុំបានឃើញការលះបង់បែបនេះ។

Under no circumstances should you leave. ទោះក្នុងកាលៈទេសៈណាក៏ដោយ អ្នកមិនត្រូវចាកចេញទេ។

The "What" Trap ⚠️

Singular or Plural verb?

(ទោះបីនាមបន្ទាប់ជាពហុវចនៈ ក៏គេច្រើនប្រើកិរិយាសព្ទឯកវចនៈ (is/was) បន្ទាប់ពី What clause ដែរ!)

What we need are answers. ❌

Hi Vanna! No, we cannot do that. Emphatic 'do' is ONLY used for Present Simple and Past Simple (because they don't normally have an auxiliary verb in positive sentences). For the future, you just emphasize the word "will" with your voice: "I WILL go." 🎤

Great question, Maly! We use it to focus the listener's attention on ONE specific detail, usually to correct a misunderstanding. If someone says, "Did Sok solve it?", you reply, "No, it was DARA who solved it." It makes "Dara" the star of the sentence! ⭐
