Paraphrase & Summarize
Essential academic skills: say it in your own words or capture only the main ideas.
1. Paraphrase: Synonyms 🔄
Replace key words with synonyms, but keep the exact same meaning.
2. Paraphrase: Structure 🏗️
Change nouns to verbs (or vice versa), or switch between Active and Passive voice.
3. Summarize: Cut it Down ✂️
A summary is much shorter than the original. It only includes the main ideas, without extra details or examples.
Don't just change one word!
Original: The cat slept on the mat.
(Just changing 'cat' to 'feline' is not enough!)
(Change structure AND vocabulary!)

Hi Sokha! Here is the best trick: Read, Cover, Write. Read the original sentence, COVER IT so you can't see it, and then write the meaning from memory. This forces your brain to use its own words instead of copying! 🧠📖
Can I use direct quotes in a summary?
Usually, no. A summary should be in your own words. If the author said something so perfectly that you CANNOT change it, you can use a very short quote, but 95% of the summary should be your words. ✍️
How short should a summary be compared to the original text?
A good rule of thumb is that a summary should be about 10% to 25% of the original text's length. If you are summarizing a 100-word paragraph, your summary should only be 1 or 2 sentences! ✂️
I always accidentally plagiarize when I try to paraphrase. I just can't think of new words. How to stop?
