Lesson 12: Objects in the Home

Vocabulary for Everyday Life

After learning about the objects in your classroom, let's learn the English words for things in the most important place: your home! This vocabulary will help you talk about your daily life.

Word Bank

In the Living Room / Main Room

  • Sofa (noun) | សាឡុង
    A long, comfortable seat for two or more people.
    Example: "We watch TV on the sofa."
  • Table (noun) | តុ
    A piece of furniture with a flat top and legs.
    Example: "The food is on the table."
  • Television (TV) (noun) | ទូរទស្សន៍
    A screen for watching shows and movies.
    Example: "My family watches TV in the evening."

In the Bedroom

  • Bed (noun) | គ្រែ
    A piece of furniture used for sleeping.
    Example: "I go to bed at ten o'clock."
  • Pillow (noun) | ខ្នើយ
    A soft cushion for your head when you sleep.
    Example: "My pillow is very soft."

In the Kitchen

  • Cup (noun) | ពែង
    A small container used for drinking coffee or tea.
    Example: "I drink coffee from a cup."
  • Plate (noun) | ចាន
    A flat dish used to hold food.
    Example: "Put the rice on the plate."
  • Spoon (noun) | ស្លាបព្រា
    A tool used for eating liquid food, like soup.
    Example: "I eat soup with a spoon."

Usage Note: Singular and Plural (-s)

When you talk about one object, it is singular. When you talk about more than one object, it is plural. For most words, you just add an "-s" at the end.

  • one cup ➞ two cups
  • one chair ➞ three chairs
  • one book ➞ ten books

Srey invites her friend Maria into her home.

Srey: Welcome to my home, Maria! Please, have a seat on the sofa.

Maria: Thank you, Srey. Your home is lovely! I like that big table.
