Passive Voice

In the Passive Voice, the focus shifts from who did the action to what received the action.

Object + To Be + V3 (Past Participle)

*The "To Be" verb changes based on the tense (is, was, will be, being, been). The V3 never changes!

កាលសាមញ្ញ (បច្ចុប្បន្ន, អតីត, អនាគត)

The room is cleaned every day. បន្ទប់ត្រូវបានសម្អាតជារៀងរាល់ថ្ងៃ។ (Present)

The room was cleaned yesterday. បន្ទប់ត្រូវបានសម្អាតកាលពីម្សិលមិញ។ (Past)

The room will be cleaned tomorrow. បន្ទប់នឹងត្រូវបានសម្អាតនៅថ្ងៃស្អែក។ (Future)

កាលកំពុងបន្ត (ប្រើ "being")

We must add being to show the action is in progress.

The room is being cleaned right now. បន្ទប់កំពុងត្រូវបានសម្អាតឥឡូវនេះ។ (Present)

The room was being cleaned when I arrived. បន្ទប់កំពុងត្រូវបានសម្អាត ពេលខ្ញុំមកដល់។ (Past)

done_all Perfect Tenses

កាលបរិបូរណ៍ (ប្រើ "been")

We must add been to show the action is completed.

The room has been cleaned. បន្ទប់ត្រូវបានសម្អាតរួចរាល់ហើយ។ (Present)

The room had been cleaned before the party. បន្ទប់ត្រូវបានសម្អាតរួចរាល់មុនកម្មវិធីជប់លៀង។ (Past)

Hi Serey! No, you do not! In fact, the main reason we use the Passive Voice is when the "doer" is unknown, unimportant, or obvious. For example, "My car was stolen." We don't need to say "by a thief" because it's obvious! 🚗

Can we use Future Continuous in the passive voice? Like "The house will be being built"?

Technically, yes, "will be being built" is grammatically possible. However, native speakers almost NEVER use it because it sounds very awkward and heavy. We usually just stick to the Future Simple passive ("will be built") to make it sound smoother! 💡
