The Grammar Lab: Critical Discourse

Critical Discourse

ការវិភាគទំនាក់ទំនងរវាងភាសា និងអំណាច

Language is never entirely neutral. Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) examines how grammar and word choice reveal hidden ideologies and power structures.

ភាសាមិនមែនជាការបញ្ចេញមតិអព្យាក្រឹត្យទាំងស្រុងនោះទេ។ CDA វិភាគមើលថាតើវេយ្យាករណ៍ និងការជ្រើសរើសពាក្យ បង្ហាញពីមនោគមវិជ្ជា និងអំណាចបង្កប់យ៉ាងដូចម្តេច។

Lexical Framing

ការប្រើពាក្យដើម្បីបង្កើតក្របខ័ណ្ឌគំនិត

The noun chosen to name a group instantly dictates how the reader feels about them.

gavel Negative Framing The police cleared the rioters. "Rioter" បង្កប់ន័យថាពួកគេជាអ្នកបង្កហិង្សា និងខុសច្បាប់។
campaign Positive/Neutral Framing The police cleared the protesters. "Protester" បង្កប់ន័យថាពួកគេកំពុងទាមទារសិទ្ធិស្របច្បាប់។

Erasing Agency

ការប្រើប្រយោគកម្មដើម្បីលាក់បាំងអ្នកធ្វើសកម្មភាព

Governments and corporations often use the Passive Voice to remove responsibility from the text.

person Active (Clear Responsibility) The CEO fired 500 workers. ប្រាប់យ៉ាងច្បាស់ថា នាយកប្រតិបត្តិជាអ្នកបញ្ឈប់បុគ្គលិក។
visibility_off Passive (Hidden Responsibility) 500 workers were let go. បុគ្គលិកត្រូវបានគេបញ្ឈប់។ (លាក់បាំងមិនឲ្យដឹងថាអ្នកណាជាអ្នកធ្វើការសម្រេចចិត្តនេះ)

Modals & Authority

ការប្រើប្រាស់កិរិយាសព្ទជំនួយដើម្បីបង្ហាញអំណាច

High modality (must, will) asserts power, while low modality (may, could) softens a claim to avoid criticism.

keyboard_double_arrow_up High Modality (Command) Citizens must comply.
keyboard_double_arrow_down Low Modality (Suggestion/Hedging) It might be beneficial to comply.

The "Neutrality" Myth

There is no such thing as a truly objective text.

កុំជឿថាមានអត្ថបទណាដែលអព្យាក្រឹត្យ១០០%ឲ្យសោះ! រាល់ការជ្រើសរើសពាក្យ គឺសុទ្ធតែមានបង្កប់នូវមនោគមវិជ្ជា និងគោលបំណងរបស់អ្នកសរសេរ។
"The troops liberated the city." vs "The army occupied the city."

Both describe the exact same physical event, but the syntax and lexical choices completely change the moral judgment of the reader.

psychology CDA CHALLENGE
Why would a news headline use: "Protesters clash with police" instead of "Police attack protesters"?
hide_source AGENCY TRAP
Which sentence strategically uses the Passive Voice to hide who is responsible for an unpopular decision?
