Denotation vs. Connotation

Every word has a Denotation (dictionary meaning) and a Connotation (emotional meaning). Let's learn the difference!

Teacher, is the word "cheap" always bad? What if I found a really good deal?

Hi Sokha! It isn't ALWAYS bad, but it often implies low quality. If you want to talk about a good deal, it's much better to use positive words like "inexpensive" or "affordable." 💡

I called my friend "bossy" as a joke. Is that okay?

With close friends, jokes are usually fine! But be very careful using it at work or with people you don't know well. "Bossy" has a strong negative connotation. It's better to use "assertive" or "confident" in professional settings! 👔
