Denotation vs. Connotation

Denotation is the exact dictionary meaning. Connotation is the positive or negative feeling attached to the word.

Do not use words with negative connotations when trying to be nice!

"Thank you for the cheap gift."
This sounds like an insult! ❌
"Thank you for the wonderful gift."
Focus on value, not the price! ✅

Not always, but mostly! If you say "I found some cheap flights", it just means low cost. But if you describe a person's clothes or a gift as "cheap", it sounds very negative and implies poor quality. ✈️

Great question! Both mean "different from others". "Unique" is positive (special, one of a kind). "Weird" is negative (strange in a bad or uncomfortable way). 🎨

You have to read the context! See how native speakers use it in sentences. Good dictionaries also often tell you if a word is "derogatory" (negative) or "complimentary" (positive). 📖
