The Interruption!

We use two tenses together to tell a story about one action interrupting another.

យើងប្រើកាលពីរចូលគ្នា ដើម្បីប្រាប់រឿងមួយដែលសកម្មភាពមួយ កំពុងកើតឡើង ស្រាប់តែមានសកម្មភាពមួយទៀតមកកាត់ផ្តាច់។

The Two Actions

សកម្មភាពទាំងពីរ

1. The Background Action

Past Continuous (was/were + -ing)

សកម្មភាពកំពុងកើតឡើង (អូសបន្លាយ)

"I was sleeping..." 😴

2. The Interruption!

Past Simple (V2 / -ed)

សកម្មភាពដែលចូលមកកាត់ផ្តាច់ (កើតឡើងភ្លាមៗ)

"...the phone rang!" 📱⚡

The Magic Words 🪄

ពាក្យភ្ជាប់សំខាន់២ (When / While)

While + Long Action

While ប្រើជាមួយ Past Continuous (កំពុង...)

When + Short Action

When ប្រើជាមួយ Past Simple (ស្រាប់តែ...)

ឧទាហរណ៍

While I was cooking, I burned my finger. ខណៈពេលដែលខ្ញុំកំពុងចម្អិនអាហារ ខ្ញុំបានរលាកដៃ។

I was walking when it started to rain. ខ្ញុំកំពុងដើរ ស្រាប់តែមេឃចាប់ផ្តើមភ្លៀង។

Tip: You can flip the sentence!
"It started to rain while I was walking." means exactly the same thing.
