The "Why" Word

ប្រាប់ពីគោលបំណង (Infinitive of Purpose)

We use To + Verb to explain why we do an action.

យើងប្រើប្រាស់ទម្រង់ To + កិរិយាសព្ទដើម ដើម្បីប្រាប់ពីមូលហេតុ ឬគោលបំណងដែលយើងធ្វើសកម្មភាពអ្វីមួយ។

1. Basic Form

ទម្រង់មូលដ្ឋាន (Action + to + Base Verb)

I study English to get a job.

ខ្ញុំរៀនភាសាអង់គ្លេសដើម្បីទទួលបានការងារធ្វើ។

She called to say happy birthday.

នាងបានខលមកដើម្បីជូនពរថ្ងៃកំណើត។

2. Formal Ways

ទម្រង់ផ្លូវការ (in order to / so as to)

He went early in order to finish.

គាត់បានទៅមុន ដើម្បីបញ្ជប់ការងារ។

I speak slowly so as to be clear.

ខ្ញុំនិយាយយឺតៗ ដើម្បីឱ្យច្បាស់។

3. Negative Form

ទម្រង់បដិសេធ (in order not to)

I left early in order not to be late.

ខ្ញុំបានចេញមកមុន ដើម្បីកុំឱ្យយឺត។

*We rarely use "not to" alone!

(យើងកម្រប្រើ "not to" តែឯងណាស់ ត្រូវប្រើភ្ជាប់ជាមួយ in order ឬ so as)

The "For" Trap!

Do NOT use "for + verb" to explain your purpose!

(កុំប្រើ "for + កិរិយាសព្ទ" ដើម្បីប្រាប់ពីគោលបំណងរបស់អ្នកឱ្យសោះ ត្រូវប្រើ "to + កិរិយាសព្ទដើម"!)

I went out for buy milk. ❌
I went out for buying milk. ❌
I went out to buy milk. ✅

Hi Sovan! No, you cannot use "for + verb". You must use "to + verb" (to get). You can only use "for" if a noun follows it, like "I study English for my career." ✨

Good ear, Vireak! We use "for + -ing" to talk about the general *function* of an object. Example: "A pen is for writing." But when explaining your *personal purpose*, always use "to". "I bought a pen to write a letter." 👍
