Speaking: Storytelling & Narrative Skills C1 - Lesson 3: Adapting Storytelling for Different Audiences & Purposes (Humor, Suspense)

Speaking C1: Storytelling
🎭

Audience & Purpose

A great story changes depending on who is listening and what you want them to feel.

😂

Crafting Humor 😂

Exaggeration (Hyperbole) Making something seem much bigger or worse than it is. ការនិយាយបំប៉ោង / បំផ្លើស "The spider was the size of a bus!"
Self-deprecation Making fun of yourself to connect with the audience. ការនិយាយបង្អាប់ខ្លួនឯងលេងសើច "I have the grace of a dancing hippo."
Irony / Contrasts When the opposite of what is expected happens. ភាពផ្ទុយស្រឡះពីការរំពឹងទុក "My dog, the 'fierce guard', hid under the bed."
🫣

Building Suspense 🫣

Pacing & Pauses Slowing down your speech and using silence. [pause]... and pushed."
Sensory Details Describing what you hear, smell, or feel. ការពិពណ៌នាលម្អិតពីអារម្មណ៍វិញ្ញាណ (សំឡេង ក្លិន) "The floorboards creaked loudly in the dark."
Withholding Information Not revealing the truth until the very end. I didn't know what it was yet."
😆

Phrases for Humor 😆

"To make a long story short..." Used to jump straight to the funny conclusion.
"You won't believe what happened next..." Builds anticipation for a ridiculous event.
"Picture this..." Forces the audience to imagine a funny scene.
😨

Phrases for Suspense 😨

"Out of nowhere..." Used for a sudden, unexpected event.
"Little did I know..." Shows that you were unaware of the danger.
"My heart skipped a beat." Expresses extreme fear or shock.
The "Rush" Trap!

Don't ruin the climax by speaking too fast!

(Pause)!)
The Rush (Bad):
"I opened the door and a ghost jumped out." (No emotion)
The Build-up (Good):
"I slowly turned the handle... pushed the door... and suddenly... A GHOST!"

Excellent question! A good dramatic pause is usually around 2 to 3 seconds. It feels very long to the speaker, but to the audience, it builds perfect tension. Just don't wait so long that they think you forgot the story! ⏱️

Yes, absolutely! In fact, the best storytellers use humor to *relieve* suspense. You build up a scary moment, and then end it with a funny, unexpected twist. (e.g., "The monster slowly opened the door... and it was just my dog wearing a towel.") 😂👻

Is self-deprecation bad? Doesn't it make you look weak to the audience?

It depends on how you use it! If you use it playfully, it actually makes you look confident and humble, which makes the audience like you more. Just don't overdo it to the point where they feel sorry for you! Keep it light. ✨
