Confident Speaking

Nerves are normal! The goal is not to eliminate them, but to manage them and speak clearly.

Buying Time ⏳

"Let me put it another way..." Use this when you mess up a sentence.
"That brings up an interesting point..." Use this to transition smoothly.
"Give me a second to gather my thoughts." It's okay to literally ask for a pause!
🗺️

Signposting 🗺️

"Moving on to the next point..." Clearly signals a transition.
"As I mentioned earlier..." Connects back to a previous idea.
"Let's summarize briefly..." Prepares the audience for the conclusion.
⏸️

Pacing & Pausing ⏸️

Speak 20% slower than normal. When nervous, we speed up. Force yourself to slow down.
Pause for 2 seconds between main ideas. Gives you time to breathe and the audience time to think.
The Apology Trap! ⚠️

Never say "Sorry, I'm nervous."

"Sorry, I forgot my point..." ❌

"Let me rephrase that..." (Pause and breathe) ✅

Mastery Check ⚡

THE APOLOGY TRAP! ❌
You stumble over a difficult word. What should you NOT do?
Meaning Check
What does it mean when you say, "Let me put it another way..."?

Teacher, is it a bad idea to memorize my whole speech so I don't get nervous?

Yes, it's very dangerous! If you memorize word-for-word, you sound robotic. Worse, if you forget *one* word, you will completely panic and freeze. Instead, memorize your outline and bullet points, and let the exact words flow naturally. 🎯

My hands always shake when I speak in public. What should I do?

This is adrenaline! You have two options: 1. Give your hands something to do, like holding a presentation clicker or index cards (use thick cardstock, not thin paper that flaps). 2. Use large, open hand gestures to release that nervous energy! 🖐️
