Speaking: Pronunciation B1 - Lesson 2: Intonation Patterns for Expressing Emotions (Surprise, Interest)

Pronunciation B1
🎵

The Melody of English

ការប្រើប្រាស់សំនៀងឡើងចុះ (Intonation)

Intonation is the music of your voice. The way your pitch goes UP or DOWN tells people how you feel!

អង់គ្លេសមិនមានសំនៀង (Tones) ដូចភាសាខ្មែរទេ ប៉ុន្តែគេប្រើសំនៀងឡើងចុះលើប្រយោគទាំងមូល ដើម្បីបង្ហាញពីអារម្មណ៍!
(Note: The robot audio buttons try their best, but you must practice the extreme highs and lows with your own voice!)
😲

Surprise! ↗️

ការបង្ហាញអារម្មណ៍ភ្ញាក់ផ្អើល (High Rising Intonation)

Rule: When you are shocked or surprised, your voice shoots HIGH UP at the end of the sentence!

High Rising Pattern ↗️ You won the lotteRY?! (អ្នកត្រូវឆ្នោត?!!)
One-Word Surprise ↗️ He did WHAT?! (គាត់បានធ្វើអី?!!)
🤔

Showing Interest ↘️↗️

ការបង្ហាញការចាប់អារម្មណ៍ (Fall-Rise Intonation)

Rule: To show you are listening and want them to continue, your voice goes DOWN, then UP.

The "Go On" Pattern ↘️↗️ Oh, real-ly? (អូ! មែនហ្នឹង?) *Voice goes down on "re", up on "ly".
Active Listening ↘️↗️ That's interest-ing... (គួរឲ្យចាប់អារម្មណ៍ណាស់...)
😑

Boredom ↘️

ការបង្ហាញភាពធុញទ្រាន់ (Flat or Falling Intonation)

Rule: If your voice is completely flat or drops down at the end, it sounds like you do NOT care.

The Sarcastic/Bored Drop ↘️ Wow. Great. (អូ អស្ចារ្យណាស់។ — និយាយទាំងមុខស្ងួត)
No Energy ↘️ That's nice. (ល្អតើ។ — សំឡេងធ្លាក់ចុះ)
The Robot Trap! 🤖

Speaking without intonation causes problems!

(ការនិយាយដោយគ្មានសំនៀងឡើងចុះ អាចធ្វើឲ្យជនជាតិបរទេសគិតថាអ្នកខឹង ធុញទ្រាន់ ឬមិនរួសរាយ!)
Flat Pitch: "I am so happy." ❌
Sounds like a lie or sarcasm!
High/Low Pitch: "I am SO happy!" ↗️↘️ ✅
Sounds genuine and friendly!

Quick Check ⚡

ការត្រួតពិនិត្យរហ័ស
Surprise Match
If you are completely shocked, your voice should go ___ at the end.
(បើអ្នកភ្ញាក់ផ្អើលខ្លាំង តើសំឡេងរបស់អ្នកនៅចុងប្រយោគគួរតែទៅជាយ៉ាងណា?)
Showing Interest
To show you are listening to a friend's story, use the ___ intonation.
(ដើម្បីបង្ហាញថាអ្នកកំពុងស្តាប់រឿងរបស់មិត្តភក្តិ តើត្រូវប្រើសំនៀងបែបណា?)
THE ROBOT TRAP! ❌
What happens if you say "Wow. Really." with a flat, falling voice?
(តើមានអ្វីកើតឡើងបើអ្នកនិយាយថា "Wow. Really." ដោយសំឡេងស្ងួត/ធ្លាក់ចុះ?)
Concept Check
Pitch in English is just like the ___ of a song.
(សំនៀងឡើងចុះក្នុងភាសាអង់គ្លេស គឺប្រៀបដូចជាអ្វីក្នុងបទចម្រៀង?)
Punctuation Match
"He did WHAT?!" uses which pattern?
(តើប្រយោគនេះប្រើប្រាស់សំនៀងឡើងចុះមួយណា?)

I feel shy using high intonation. I feel like I'm acting in a movie. How do I practice without sounding crazy?

Hi Sovan! That is very normal. Because Khmer doesn't use massive pitch jumps for emotions, English feels unnatural at first. My advice? Over-exaggerate when you are alone in your room! Sing it! Once you get used to the crazy high pitch, your "normal" speaking pitch will naturally adjust. 🎤

Is intonation different in Khmer?

Yes! Khmer language relies more on specific words (particles) like ទេ, ហ៎, ណា៎ at the end of a sentence to show emotion or ask a question. English doesn't have those words, so we HAVE to use the "melody" of our voice instead! 🎶

Does high pitch always mean surprise?

Not always! A standard rising pitch is also used for Yes/No questions (e.g., "Are you ↗️ready?"). However, for SURPRISE, the pitch jumps up much higher and much faster than a normal question! 📈
