Self-Correction

សិល្បៈនៃការកែកំហុសខ្លួនឯងកម្រិតខ្ពស់

Native speakers make mistakes constantly. At C1, the goal isn't perfection; it's the smooth recovery using bridging phrases.

នៅកម្រិត C1 គោលដៅមិនមែននិយាយមិនខុសសោះនោះទេ តែគឺជារបៀបដែលអ្នកកែកំហុសភ្លាមៗដោយរលូន មិនរអាក់រអួល។
⚖️

1. Nuancing

ការតម្រឹមន័យ (Updating to a better word)
Formal/Academic:
The project was a failure, or rather, a learning experience.
គម្រោងនោះបរាជ័យ... ឬនិយាយឱ្យត្រូវទៅ គឺជាបទពិសោធន៍រៀនសូត្រ។
Formal Clarification:
The timeline is tight, that is to say, we have two weeks.
ពេលវេលាមានកំណត់... និយាយម្យ៉ាងទៀតគឺ យើងមានពេលតែពីរសប្តាហ៍។
🔄

2. Catching a Slip

ការកែកំហុសវេយ្យាករណ៍ ឬទិន្នន័យភ្លាមៗ
Conversational/Standard:
He have... I mean, he has been working here...
គាត់មាន... ខ្ញុំចង់និយាយថា គាត់បានធ្វើការនៅទីនេះ...
Correcting a Fact:
The meeting is on Tuesday. Well, actually, it's on Wednesday.
ការប្រជុំគឺនៅថ្ងៃអង្គារ។ អូ! តាមពិតទៅ គឺថ្ងៃពុធ។
🏗️

3. Restructuring

ការរៀបចំប្រយោគឡើងវិញ (ពេលនិយាយវង្វេង)
Starting Over Smoothly:
The reason we can't... let me rephrase that. Our budget limits us from...
ហេតុផលដែលយើងមិនអាច... ទុកឲ្យខ្ញុំនិយាយឡើងវិញ។ ថវិកាយើងមានកំណត់...
Clarifying the Core Point:
It's just that the server... what I'm trying to say is, we need an upgrade.
គឺថាម៉ាស៊ីនមេ... អ្វីដែលខ្ញុំព្យាយាមនិយាយគឺ យើងត្រូវតែដំឡើងវា។
The Apology Trap! ⚠️

Do not say "Sorry for my bad English" mid-sentence.

(ប្រយ័ត្ន! នៅពេលនិយាយខុសវេយ្យាករណ៍បន្តិចបន្តួច កុំសុំទោសរហូត។ គ្រាន់តែប្រើឃ្លាតភ្ជាប់ (I mean...) ហើយនិយាយបន្តដោយភាពជឿជាក់។)
He go... oh sorry, my grammar is bad, he goes. ❌

He go... I mean, he goes to the office. ✅

Intonation Tip: Notice how the speaker's voice drops slightly in pitch when they say "I mean" or "or rather", and then immediately returns to the normal pitch for the corrected word. This signals to the listener that a quick fix is happening!

Teacher, isn't it better to just practice until we don't make mistakes anymore, especially at the C1 level?

Great question, Sovan. Actually, native speakers make grammar slips constantly in fast, unscripted speech! Fluency at C1/C2 isn't about robotic perfection; it's about the agility to self-correct seamlessly without breaking the listener's engagement. 🎙️

Is "I mean" too informal to use in an academic presentation?

Yes, "I mean" leans conversational. If you misspeak during an academic defense, it is much more elegant to use "Or rather," or "To be more precise," to correct yourself. 🏛️
