What You Will Learn
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Identify a simple list.
- Identify a simple sign.
- Identify a simple sentence.
- Tell the difference between these three types of short texts.
Hello Cambodian Learners!
When you see English words, they can be arranged in different ways. Sometimes it's a list (like a shopping list), sometimes it's a sign (like "STOP" or a shop name in Battambang), and sometimes it's a sentence that tells you something. Knowing the type of text helps you understand its purpose quickly!
What are These Text Types?
Let's look at some examples. Click on the text in the blue boxes to hear it read.
1. A List
A list has items written one after another. Often, each item is on a new line.
- apples
- milk
- bread
This is a list of things to buy.
2. A Sign
A sign gives a short message or information. You see signs on roads, shops, and buildings.
This is a sign. It tells you to stop.
3. A Simple Sentence
A simple sentence tells a complete thought. It usually has a person/thing and an action.
This is a sentence. It tells us what the cat does.

Note for Educators/Platform Development: This lesson introduces basic text types: list, sign, sentence. Activities focus on identification. Ensure Web Speech API is supported. Replace placeholder images with clear, culturally relevant examples for Cambodian learners (e.g., a local market list, a common sign in Khmer and English, a simple sentence about Cambodian life).
