Travel Announcements
Lesson Goals
- Catch important details (Gate, Time, Flight Number).
- Ignore extra words you don't need.
- Understand "Delayed" vs. "On Time".
When you are at an airport or train station, you hear a lot of noise. You don't need to understand every word. You only need to listen for Keywords.
1. Scanning for Numbers
Imagine you are looking for your flight. Your eyes look for numbers. Your ears should do the same.
Keywords to listen for: Flight Number (K6 102), Time (Eleven-Fifteen), Gate (B4).
2. Listening for Time
Announcements use two ways to tell time:
- Digital: "Ten Thirty" (10:30) - Easiest
- Classic: "Half past ten" (10:30) - Harder
Practice: If you hear "Quarter to nine", it means 8:45.
Tip: "Attention Please!"
Announcements often start with standard phrases. You can ignore these:
- "May I have your attention please..."
- "This is a passenger announcement for..."
- "We regret to inform you..." (Bad news coming!)
Focus on what comes after these phrases.
Practice Activity: Fill the Gaps
Listen to the announcement in the audio. Choose the correct details below.
