Listening: Listening for Specific Information A2 - Lesson 2: Answering Wh- Questions about Short Stories or Descriptions

Listening A2 - Lesson 2
Listening A2

The 5 Ws: Detail Detective

Lesson Goals

  • Listen for specific details in a short story.
  • Understand the 5 Wh- Questions (Who, What, Where, When, Why).
  • Ignore extra information and find the answer.

When you listen to a story, you don't need to remember every word. You act like a Detective. You look for specific "clues" or details.

1. The 5 Clues (Wh- Questions)

To find specific information, listen for these question words:

WHO? 👤 Person (Sophea, Teacher)
WHERE? 📍 Place (School, Market)
WHEN? ⏰ Time (Yesterday, 5 PM)
WHAT? 📦 Thing/Action (Pizza, Running)
Strategy: Scan Listening

Before you listen, read the question first!

If the question is "Where did Tom go?", your brain only needs to listen for a PLACE. You can ignore the time, the people, and the feelings.

Question 1: Who lost the dog?

  • A. Tom's mother
  • B. Tom
  • C. The teacher

Question 2: Where did he find the dog?

  • A. At home
  • B. In the river
  • C. Under a tree

Question 3: What was the dog doing?

  • A. Sleeping
  • B. Eating a sandwich
  • C. Barking
