Active Listening: How to Summarize

CEFR Level B1

Lesson Goals

In this lesson, you will learn and practice how to summarize. This powerful active listening skill helps you confirm your understanding of the main points of a talk.

The 3-Step Process for Summarizing

A good summary shows you have truly understood a topic. It is more than just repeating words. Follow these three steps to create an excellent summary:

  1. Listen to Understand: The first time you listen, just focus on the main idea (the gist). Don't try to remember details. What is the speaker's main message?
  2. Listen and Take Notes: The second time you listen, write down only the keywords, important numbers, and main ideas. Do not write full sentences.
  3. Summarize from Your Notes: Put the original text away. Look only at your notes and use them to build one or two new sentences. This forces you to use your own words.
Key Tip: Use Your Own Words

The most important part of summarizing is to use in your own words. Why is this so important?

  • It proves you understand the meaning of the ideas, not just the words.
  • It helps you remember the information much better than just repeating it.
  • It is a key academic and professional skill for meetings, reports, and emails.

Always try to explain the ideas as if you were teaching them to a friend.

Practice Activities

Listen to the talks in the audio player. Follow the 3-step process to practice summarizing.

  1. Guided Practice: Tourism in Cambodia

Listen to the first talk about tourism. Take simple notes, then compare them to the examples below to build your summary.

"Tourism is very important for the Cambodian economy. Millions of people visit the country every year. The most popular destination is, of course, Siem Reap, because of the famous Angkor Wat temples. However, the government is also encouraging tourists to visit other areas, such as the beautiful beaches in the south and the mountains in the northeast, to help the economy grow in those regions too."
    Show Example Notes
    • Tourism = important for Cambodia economy
    • Most popular: Siem Reap (Angkor Wat)
    • Gov't wants tourists to visit other places: beaches, mountains
    • Why? Help economy in other parts of country
    Show Example Summary

From these notes, a good summary is: "Tourism is important for Cambodia's economy. Although Siem Reap is the most popular place, the government wants to encourage tourists to also visit other regions, like the beaches and mountains, to help their economies grow."

  2. Independent Practice: Benefits of Exercise

Now, try on your own. Listen to the second talk about exercise. Take your own notes. Then, choose the best summary from the options below.

"Regular exercise is essential for a healthy life. It is not just about losing weight. It makes your heart stronger, which reduces the risk of heart disease. Furthermore, exercise is proven to improve your mood and reduce stress because it releases chemicals in your brain called endorphins."

Which is the best summary of the talk?

    • (a) Exercise is only for losing weight and making your heart strong.
    • (b) The main benefits of exercise are a stronger heart to reduce disease risk, and an improved mood from brain chemicals called endorphins.
    • (c) Endorphins are chemicals in your brain that are released when you exercise, and this is good for your heart.
    Show Answer

Answer: (b). This is the best summary because it correctly identifies the two main points of the talk: heart health and mood improvement.

Using your own language and sentence structure, not copying someone else's.

  • Economy (noun) [សេដ្ឋកិច្ច]

The system of how money, business, and trade are organized in a country.

  • Destination (noun) [គោលដៅ]

The place to which someone or something is going or being sent.

Your Mission

Use your new summarizing skill in the real world with these challenges.

  1. Summarize the News: Find a short (1-minute) news story in English on YouTube or a news website. Listen to it twice, taking notes the second time. Then, use only your notes to tell a friend (or record yourself) what the story was about in 1-2 sentences.
  2. Summarize a Conversation: After you have a conversation with a friend today, take one minute to think. What were the main points you discussed? Try to summarize the conversation in your head. This is excellent practice for remembering important information.
