Grammar: ✨ Grammar F: 🧩 Parts of Speech - Basics (A1) - Lesson 15: Demonstratives 'this' & 'that'

👉 A1 Grammar: Using 'this' and 'that'

Objective: To learn how to use the singular demonstratives "this" and "that" to point to things near and far.

  • Understand that "this" is for one thing that is near.
  • Understand that "that" is for one thing that is far.
  • Practice choosing the correct word based on distance.

Pointing with Words

When we want to show someone what we are talking about, we use special "pointing words." Today, we will learn the two words we use to point to a single thing: this and that.

The Rules for 'this' and 'that'

The word you choose depends on how close the object is to you.

🙋 🍎 🏠 This That
  • We use this for one thing that is NEAR.

e.g., "This is my book. (The book is in my hand)."

  • We use that for one thing that is FAR.

e.g., "That is a big tree. (The tree is across the park)."

✍️ Let's Practice!

Activity 1: Near or Far?

Look at the picture and the sentence. Choose the correct pointing word.

Activity 2: Fill in the Blank

Read the sentence and its clue (near/far). Type "This" or "That" in the blank space.

Great Job! You have learned how to use "this" and "that" to point to singular things. Remember: this is for near, and that is for far.
