2. Grammar: Defining/Non-Defining Relative Clauses

Relative clauses give us more information about a noun. At the B2 level, it is critical to distinguish between Defining clauses (essential information) and Non-Defining clauses (extra information).

Clause Type Rule Example
Defining Gives essential information. Do not use commas. "That" can replace who/which. The engineer who designed the solar array works in Ratanakiri.
Non-Defining Gives extra, non-essential information. Must use commas. Cannot use "that". Tola, who is a lake ranger, supports renewable energy.

Grammar Practice: Part 1 - Relative Pronouns

Fill in the correct relative pronoun (who, which, whose, where). Do not use "that".

1. Ravy, workshop is entirely off-grid, carves beautiful sculptures.
2. The new turbine, was installed last week, powers the entire village.
3. Ratanakiri is a province conservation efforts are rapidly expanding.

Grammar Practice: Part 2 - Defining vs. Non-Defining

Type "D" for Defining or "ND" for Non-Defining based on the sentence structure.

1. The solar panels that line the roof are highly efficient.
2. Hydropower, which utilizes river currents, is popular here.
3. The biomass plant, which opened yesterday, reduces emissions.

Ratanakiri province, which is famous for its stunning landscapes and indigenous cultures, is undergoing a quiet revolution. At the heart of this transition is Yeak Laom Lake, a volcanic crater lake where conservation efforts are deeply respected by the local community. Tola, who works as a dedicated lake ranger, patrols the area daily. His primary focus has always been the protection of the surrounding forests, but recently, he has become an advocate for sustainable technologies.

Last Tuesday, Tola visited Ravy, a local artisan whose off-grid workshop sits just a few kilometers from the lake's edge. Ravy produces traditional crafts using natural materials, but her methods of powering her tools have completely modernized. Instead of relying on a loud, diesel-powered generator, which produces harmful emissions, she recently installed a state-of-the-art solar array on her roof.

"The solar panels, which were donated by a renewable energy NGO, have changed everything," Ravy explained to Tola while carving a piece of reclaimed wood. "Because my workshop is completely off-grid, I used to worry about the cost and pollution of diesel. Now, my energy is completely sustainable."

Tola nodded in agreement. The local council, which oversees the lake's management, is also looking into hydropower solutions. They are considering installing a small-scale micro-turbine in a nearby stream. This turbine, unlike massive dams that can disrupt ecosystems, would generate just enough electricity to keep the ranger station grid-connected without harming the environment.

"We must embrace these changes," Tola noted. "If we want to maintain the pristine beauty of Ratanakiri, we have to look into geothermal, biomass, and solar options. Every step we take toward lowering our carbon emissions is a step toward true conservation."

The transition to renewable energy in rural Cambodia is not without its challenges. The initial costs for equipment are high, and maintenance requires specialized knowledge. However, artisans like Ravy and rangers like Tola prove that the adoption of green technology is possible. The tools that they use daily are paving the way for a cleaner, greener Ratanakiri.

Reading Comprehension

1. What is the main reason Ravy switched to a solar array?
2. How does the proposed micro-turbine differ from a traditional dam?
3. Which grammar structure is used in: "The solar panels, which were donated by a renewable energy NGO, have changed everything"?

4. Listening: Planning for the Future

Conversation

Tola and Ravy are discussing the possibility of expanding the renewable energy setup. Listen to their conversation.

Tola Your solar setup is impressive, Ravy. But what happens during the rainy season?
Ravy That is a good question. The batteries, which store excess power, usually last a few days. But I am looking into biomass.
Tola Biomass? You mean using agricultural waste from the farms that surround the lake?
Ravy Exactly. It is a sustainable option that reduces overall emissions.
Tola The council, which meets next week, might have grants for that. I will bring it up.

Listening Quiz

1. Ravy's batteries can store power for months.
2. Biomass would use waste from surrounding farms.

5. Speaking: Roleplay Practice

Imagine you are pitching a new renewable energy idea to Tola. Read the prompts aloud, making sure to use the grammar rules correctly.

Tola
We need a solution for the ranger station during the dry season.
Ravy (You)
The solar panels, which we can install on the roof, will provide enough energy.
Tola
What about the initial cost? It is quite expensive.
Ravy (You)
The NGO that visited last month has offered to cover half the cost.

6. Writing: Formal Email Proposal

Look at the model text. Notice how the writer uses Non-Defining Relative Clauses to add extra, professional details.

Dear Ratanakiri Council,

I am writing to propose a new biomass initiative. The agricultural waste, which is currently burned in open fields, creates terrible emissions. By building a processing facility, which requires a small initial investment, we can turn this waste into sustainable fuel.

Your Turn to Write

Complete the formal email below proposing a solar array or a turbine. Add your own relative clauses.

Dear Council Members,

I am writing to suggest that we install a new to support our community.

This project, which , will help us become entirely off-grid.

The local rangers, who , fully support this conservation effort.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]
