2. Grammar: Defining & Non-Defining Relative Clauses

At the B2 level, it is vital to distinguish between relative clauses that provide essential information (Defining) and those that provide extra, non-essential information (Non-Defining).

Type Function Punctuation Example from Kep Context
Defining Relative Clause Identifies exactly who or what we are talking about. If removed, the sentence loses its primary meaning. Cannot use "that" for people in strict formal rules, but common in speech. No commas. The fisherman who caught these crabs is Kimsan. (Tells us exactly which fisherman).
Non-Defining Relative Clause Adds extra, non-essential information. If removed, the core meaning of the sentence remains clear. "That" cannot be used. Must use commas. Sreymom, who is a vendor at the crab market, understands her niche market. (We already know who Sreymom is; the clause is just bonus info).

Grammar Practice: Part 1 - Identification

Type D for Defining or ND for Non-Defining based on the punctuation and context.

1. Kep, which is located in southern Cambodia, has a great competitive advantage in seafood.
2. The promotional campaign that we launched yesterday is working.

Grammar Practice: Part 2 - Pronoun Selection

Type the correct relative pronoun (who, which, whose, where). Do not use 'that'.

1. Kimsan, boat is docked at the pier, is expanding his sourcing.
2. The Crab Market is the exact location Sreymom manages wholesale orders.
3. Blue swimmer crabs, are known for their sweet meat, appeal to a specific target audience.

3. Reading: Scaling Up the Catch in Kep

In the bustling coastal town of Kep, which is famous for its vibrant seafood scene, local businesses are looking for ways to expand. Kimsan, who is a dedicated fisherman, has spent the last decade navigating the Gulf of Thailand. However, relying solely on local walk-in customers was limiting his potential. He needed to rethink his marketing strategies.

He teamed up with Sreymom, a vendor whose stall at the Kep Crab Market is always busy. Sreymom understood that their competitive advantage was the incredible freshness of their blue swimming crabs. "We can't just sell to tourists," Sreymom explained. "Our true target audience should include high-end restaurants in Phnom Penh."

To reach this niche market, they developed a strong brand identity around sustainable fishing. They called their venture 'Kep Coastal Catch.' Because premium restaurants require consistent sourcing, Kimsan agreed to provide a guaranteed weekly quota. Sreymom structured a wholesale pricing model, which ensured a healthy profit margin while remaining attractive to executive chefs.

Initially, they didn't have a massive budget for a digital promotional campaign. Instead, they relied heavily on word-of-mouth. A chef who bought their first wholesale batch was incredibly impressed and recommended them to three other restaurants. Sreymom also focused intensely on customer retention by offering flexible delivery times and personalized service. By combining Kimsan’s reliable sourcing with Sreymom’s astute marketing strategies, the pair successfully transformed a small local stall into a premier seafood supplier for the capital.

Reading Synthesis & Comprehension

1. What is the defining relative clause in the second paragraph telling us?
2. How did Kimsan and Sreymom initially promote their new wholesale business?

Sreymom Kimsan, did the executive chef, who called us yesterday, agree to our wholesale prices?
Kimsan Yes, he did! He said our competitive advantage is the daily freshness. The sourcing timeline we proposed works perfectly for his menu.
Sreymom That is excellent news. It means our brand identity is resonating with our target audience.
Kimsan Exactly. Now we need to focus on customer retention. The restaurants which rely on us cannot afford delayed shipments.

Listening Quiz

1. The executive chef agreed to the wholesale prices because of their competitive advantage in freshness.
2. Kimsan believes that customer retention is not important once the contract is signed.

5. Speaking: Roleplay Practice

Practice aloud. You are Sreymom. Reply to Kimsan using the provided sentence, making sure to pronounce the relative clauses clearly.

Kimsan
Sreymom, how should we improve our profit margin this quarter?
Sreymom (You)
We should launch a promotional campaign, which will target the niche market in Phnom Penh.

6. Writing: Formal Pitch Email

Look at the model text. Notice how the writer uses Marketing Vocabulary and Relative Clauses to pitch a product to a restaurant.

Dear Chef Rithy,

I am writing on behalf of Kep Coastal Catch, which is a local seafood supplier dedicated to sustainable sourcing. We know that your restaurant, which serves premium clientele, values high-quality ingredients. Our competitive advantage is delivering live blue crabs within hours of capture. We would love to discuss a wholesale agreement that benefits your profit margin.

Your Turn to Write

Dear [Restaurant Manager],

I represent [Your Business Name], which (Add a non-defining relative clause). We believe our product is perfect for your (target audience/niche market). The customers who (Add a defining relative clause) always leave great reviews, creating strong (word-of-mouth/brand identity).

Please let me know if we can arrange a meeting.
