2. Grammar: First Conditional
We use the First Conditional to talk about a realistic or possible situation in the future and its result.
| Condition (If clause) | Result (Main clause) |
|---|---|
| If + Present Simple | will / won't + Base Verb |
| If you file a report, | they will track your bag. |
| If the bus arrives late, | Rith won't have time for coffee. |
| If I misplace my receipt, | will they reimburse me? |
Note: The clauses can change order. (They will track your bag if you file a report.)
Grammar Practice: Part 1 (If Clause)
Conjugate the verb in the brackets to the present simple tense.
Grammar Practice: Part 2 (Result Clause)
Use will or won't + the base verb in the brackets.
3. Reading: Context in Mondulkiri
Rith, a local coffee farmer, stood at the dusty bus station in Sen Monorom, Mondulkiri. He had just returned from selling his coffee beans in Phnom Penh. The trip was successful, but there was a big problem: his suitcase was missing. He stood near the baggage claim area, watching everyone else walk away with their belongings.
His friend Phaly, who works at the nearby Elephant Valley Project, came to pick him up. "What's wrong, Rith?" she asked.
"I think they misplaced my suitcase," Rith sighed. "I can't find it anywhere."
"Don't worry," Phaly said. "If we talk to customer service, they will help us. Let's go to their desk."
At the desk, the staff member asked Rith to describe his bag so they could identify it easily. Rith explained that it was a large blue suitcase with a yellow tag. The worker told Rith to file a report.
"If you show me your bus receipt, I will give you a tracking number," the worker explained. "If our driver finds your bag at the next stop, we will call you this evening."
Rith felt a little better. "And what happens if you never find it?" he asked.
"If we cannot find your suitcase within seven days, the company will reimburse you for your lost items," she promised.
Rith took the paper and thanked her. "Well," he said to Phaly, "If we have to wait, we will go drink some Mondulkiri coffee!"

Dear Customer Service,
I am writing to file a report about my missing bag. I traveled on the 8 AM bus to Sen Monorom today. When I went to the baggage claim area, my blue suitcase was not there. All my personal belongings are inside.
I have attached a photo of my bus receipt. If you need me to describe the bag in more detail, I will call you. If the driver finds it, please give me a tracking number so I can pick it up.
Thank you,
Rith
