Phrasal Verbs

A Phrasal Verb is a base verb combined with a smaller word (like up, off, in, or out). When put together, they create a brand new meaning! In this lesson, we will look at how adding different particles to common base verbs completely changes the definition.

Take

(Normal meaning: to carry or move something)
Take off
Meaning: 1. To remove clothing. 2. When an airplane leaves the ground.
អត្ថន័យ៖ ១. ដោះ(សម្លៀកបំពាក់) ២. ហោះឡើង(យន្តហោះ)
ความหมาย: 1. ถอด(เสื้อผ้า) 2. (เครื่องบิน)ขึ้น
意思:1. 脱下 2. 起飞
"Please take off your shoes before entering the house."
Take up
Meaning: To begin a new hobby or activity.
អត្ថន័យ៖ ចាប់ផ្តើមធ្វើអ្វីមួយ (ចំណង់ចំណូលចិត្ត)
Signification: Commencer une nouvelle activité
Ý nghĩa: Bắt đầu một sở thích mới
"He decided to take up photography in his free time."
Take after
Meaning: To look or behave like an older member of your family.
អត្ថន័យ៖ មានចរិត ឬមុខមាត់ដូច (សាច់ញាតិ)
Significado: Parecerse a (un familiar)
"She really takes after her mother; they both love painting."

Give

(Normal meaning: to freely transfer possession of something)
Give up
Meaning: To stop trying or to quit a habit.
អត្ថន័យ៖ បោះបង់ / លះបង់ចោល
意味:あきらめる / やめる
"Learning English can be hard, but don't give up!"
Give away
Meaning: 1. To give something for free. 2. To reveal a secret.
អត្ថន័យ៖ ១. ផ្តល់ឱ្យដោយឥតគិតថ្លៃ ២. ទម្លាយអាថ៌កំបាំង
의미: 1. 거저 주다 2. 비밀을 누설하다
"Don't give away the ending of the movie; I haven't seen it yet!"
