Module 2: Understanding Different Text Types

school

Welcome to Module 2 of your A2 Reading track. I am Teacher Sopheak. When reading in daily life, texts do not just look like plain paragraphs in a book. Real-world reading requires you to identify the physical layout of a document instantly.

Knowing whether you are looking at an email, a narrative story, or an official application form changes how your brain scans for information.

1. Personal Correspondence (Emails)

Emails and postcards follow a strict structural hierarchy. You can find the main topic before reading the actual message by scanning the Subject Line. The text always begins with a greeting and concludes with a sign-off.

2. Forms & Instructions

Registration forms do not use full sentences. They use short, specific noun labels indicating where you must input your personal data. Reading these labels correctly prevents administrative errors.

warning The Name Inversion Trap

A very common error when filling out English forms is confusing the name fields. Ensure you map your identity correctly to the English terminology:

First Name / Given Name Your personal name (e.g., Sopheak)
Surname / Last Name / Family Name Your family name (e.g., Pich)

3. Simple Narratives

Short stories and recounts use full paragraph structures. To scan a narrative easily, look for Sequence Markers at the beginning of sentences. They reveal the chronological timeline of events.
