Welcome back! When my students are working in a local café or giving a bicycle tour around Battambang, pointing out specific things to guests is essential. We use words like 'this' or 'those' depending on two rules: how close the object is to us, and whether there is just one item or many. Let's practice "pointing" with English words!

warning Common Mistake
In Khmer, "នេះ" (this/these) and "នោះ" (that/those) are often used without changing the word for plural items. In English, you must change the word from "This" to "These" if you are holding more than one thing!
នៅក្នុងភាសាខ្មែរ "នេះ" និង "នោះ" ច្រើនតែប្រើដោយមិនផ្លាស់ប្តូរពាក្យសម្រាប់វត្ថុច្រើននោះទេ។ ប៉ុន្តែនៅក្នុងភាសាអង់គ្លេស អ្នកត្រូវតែប្តូរពាក្យពី "This" ទៅ "These" ប្រសិនបើមានវត្ថុច្រើនជាងមួយ!

That
Used to point to one thing that is far away from you (you have to point).
នោះ - ប្រើសម្រាប់ចង្អុលបង្ហាញវត្ថុមួយដែលនៅឆ្ងាយពីអ្នក។
Example: Look at that beautiful temple on the mountain.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ មើលទៅប្រាសាទដ៏ស្រស់ស្អាតនៅលើភ្នំនោះ។

These
Used to point to two or more things that are close to you.
ទាំងនេះ - ប្រើសម្រាប់ចង្អុលបង្ហាញវត្ថុច្រើនដែលនៅជិតអ្នក។
Example: These fresh mangoes on my table are very sweet.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ផ្លែស្វាយស្រស់ៗនៅលើតុខ្ញុំទាំងនេះគឺផ្អែមណាស់។

Those
Used to point to two or more things that are far away from you.
ទាំងនោះ - ប្រើសម្រាប់ចង្អុលបង្ហាញវត្ថុច្រើនដែលនៅឆ្ងាយពីអ្នក។
Example: Those tourists across the street are looking for a tuk-tuk.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ភ្ញៀវទេសចរនៅឆ្លងផ្លូវទាំងនោះកំពុងរកកង់បី។
