Lesson 2: Spelling Irregularities & Basic Paragraph Structure

When my university students first transition from writing single sentences to full essays, they face two big challenges: organizing their thoughts into paragraphs, and spelling irregular English words. Today, we'll learn how to build a strong paragraph sandwich, and how to spell words that don't follow the normal plural 's' rule. Vocabulary List: Children (Irregular Plural) - More than one child. Feet (Irregular Plural) - More than one foot. Leaves (Irregular Plural) - More than one leaf. Topic Sentence (Paragraph) - The main idea of the paragraph. Supporting Details (Paragraph) - Sentences that explain the topic. Concluding Sentence (Paragraph) - The final wrap-up sentence. Common Mistake: Fake Plurals In many languages, words don't change spelling when there is more than one. In English, we usually add "s". But watch out for irregular words!
