Lesson 2: Prepositions of Time & Place

Welcome back to A2 Vocabulary! I am Teacher Sopheak. When I coordinate local activities or team meetings for Soksabike here in Battambang, tourists and staff always ask me "Where is the meeting point?" and "When do we leave?"

Using the correct small words—prepositions—is the secret to giving clear directions and organizing smooth schedules. Let's master them!

English prepositions are very specific!

នៅក្នុងភាសាខ្មែរ យើងតែងតែប្រើពាក្យ "នៅ" សម្រាប់ទីកន្លែង និងពេលវេលាទាំងអស់។ តែក្នុងភាសាអង់គ្លេស យើងត្រូវជ្រើសរើសរវាង In, On, ឬ At!

Place

In /ɪn/ នៅក្នុង (ទីក្រុង, ប្រទេស, បន្ទប់)

Used for enclosed spaces or large areas like cities and countries.

ប្រើសម្រាប់ទីធ្លាបិទជិត ឬតំបន់ធំៗដូចជា ទីក្រុង និងប្រទេស។

Example: We live in Battambang. The meeting is in the office.

ឧទាហរណ៍៖ យើងរស់នៅក្នុងខេត្តបាត់ដំបង។ ការប្រជុំគឺនៅក្នុងការិយាល័យ។

Place

On /ɑːn/ នៅលើ (ផ្ទៃ, ផ្លូវ)

Used to show something is touching a surface, or located along a street.

ប្រើដើម្បីបង្ហាញថាមានអ្វីមួយប៉ះផ្ទៃខាងលើ ឬស្ថិតនៅតាមបណ្តោយផ្លូវ។

Example: The keys are on the table. The shop is on Street 2.5.

ឧទាហរណ៍៖ សោរនៅលើតុ។ ហាងនោះនៅលើផ្លូវ ២.៥។

Place

At /æt/ នៅ (ទីតាំងជាក់លាក់)

Used for a very specific point, address, or location.

ប្រើសម្រាប់ចំណុចជាក់លាក់ អាសយដ្ឋាន ឬទីតាំងច្បាស់លាស់ណាមួយ។

Example: I will meet you at Soksabike. She is waiting at the bus station.

ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ខ្ញុំនឹងជួបអ្នកនៅ Soksabike។ នាងកំពុងរង់ចាំនៅចំណតឡានក្រុង។

Time

In /ɪn/ នៅ (ខែ, ឆ្នាំ, ពេលព្រឹក/ល្ងាច)

Used for longer periods: months, years, seasons, or parts of the day.

ប្រើសម្រាប់រយៈពេលវែង៖ ខែ ឆ្នាំ រដូវ ឬពេលវេលាក្នុងមួយថ្ងៃ។

Example: The Water Festival is in November. I drink coffee in the morning.

ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ពិធីបុណ្យអុំទូកគឺនៅខែវិច្ឆិកា។ ខ្ញុំញ៉ាំកាហ្វេនៅពេលព្រឹក។

Time

On /ɑːn/ នៅ (ថ្ងៃនៃសប្តាហ៍, ថ្ងៃទី)

Used for specific days of the week and dates.

ប្រើសម្រាប់ថ្ងៃជាក់លាក់នៃសប្តាហ៍ និងកាលបរិច្ឆេទ។

Example: Our team meeting is on Monday. My birthday is on July 4th.

ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ការប្រជុំក្រុមរបស់យើងគឺនៅថ្ងៃច័ន្ទ។ ថ្ងៃកំណើតរបស់ខ្ញុំគឺនៅថ្ងៃទី ៤ កក្កដា។

Time

At /æt/ នៅ (ម៉ោងជាក់លាក់)

Used for exact clock times.

ប្រើសម្រាប់ម៉ោងជាក់លាក់លើនាឡិកា។

Example: The cycling tour starts exactly at 7:30 AM.

ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ដំណើរកម្សាន្តជិះកង់ចាប់ផ្តើមនៅម៉ោង ៧:៣០ ព្រឹកពិតប្រាកដ។
