Welcome back! When my students in Battambang want to ask tourists about their trip or share what they didn't do over the weekend, we use the Past Simple. Asking questions and saying "no" in the past can be tricky because we have to use the helper word "did". Let's master this so you can have great conversations about past adventures.

warning Common Mistake
In Khmer, we sometimes translate directly and say "Did you went?". In English, when you use "Did" (for a question) or "Didn't" (for negative), the main action verb must go back to its base, normal form. Say "Did you go?" and "I didn't go."
នៅក្នុងភាសាខ្មែរ យើងពេលខ្លះបកប្រែផ្ទាល់។ ក្នុងភាសាអង់គ្លេស នៅពេលអ្នកប្រើ "Did" (សម្រាប់សំណួរ) ឬ "Didn't" (សម្រាប់បដិសេធ) កិរិយាសព្ទសំខាន់ត្រូវតែត្រលប់ទៅទម្រង់ដើមវិញ។ ឧទាហរណ៍៖ "Did you go?" មិនមែន "Did you went?" ទេ។

To go to see a person or a place of interest.
ទស្សនា / ទៅលេង - ទៅមើលកន្លែងណាមួយ ឬជួបនរណាម្នាក់។
Question: Did Lisa visit the Royal Palace?
Negative: She didn't visit the palace today because it was closed.
សំណួរ៖ តើលីសាបានទៅទស្សនាព្រះបរមរាជវាំងមែនទេ? / បដិសេធ៖ នាងមិនបានទៅទស្សនាព្រះបរមរាជវាំងទេថ្ងៃនេះ។

To put food in your mouth, chew it, and swallow it.
ញ៉ាំ / ទទួលទាន - ដាក់អាហារក្នុងមាត់ ហើយលេប។
Question: Did the guests eat the Fish Amok?
Negative: They didn't eat it because it was too spicy.
សំណួរ៖ តើភ្ញៀវបានញ៉ាំអាម៉ុកត្រីមែនទេ? / បដិសេធ៖ ពួកគេមិនបានញ៉ាំវាទេ ព្រោះវាហឹរពេក។

To get something by paying money for it.
ទិញ - ទទួលបានអ្វីមួយដោយចំណាយប្រាក់។
Question: Did he buy a krama at the market?
Negative: He looked around, but he didn't buy any souvenirs.
សំណួរ៖ តើគាត់បានទិញក្រមានៅផ្សារមែនទេ? / បដិសេធ៖ គាត់មើលជុំវិញ ប៉ុន្តែគាត់មិនបានទិញវត្ថុអនុស្សាវរីយ៍ណាមួយឡើយ។

ឃើញ / មើល - កត់សម្គាល់ដោយប្រើភ្នែករបស់អ្នក។
Question: Did we see the Irrawaddy dolphins on the boat tour?
Negative: Sadly, we didn't see them yesterday.
សំណួរ៖ តើយើងបានឃើញសត្វផ្សោតអ៊ីរ៉ាវ៉ាឌីនៅលើទូកទេសចរណ៍មែនទេ? / បដិសេធ៖ គួរឱ្យស្តាយ យើងមិនបានឃើញពួកវាកាលពីម្សិលមិញទេ។

To take pleasure in an activity or experience.
រីករាយ / ចូលចិត្ត - ទទួលបានសេចក្តីរីករាយពីសកម្មភាពណាមួយ។
Question: Did you enjoy the Apsara dance performance?
Negative: I didn't enjoy the seating, but the dancing was beautiful.
សំណួរ៖ តើអ្នកចូលចិត្តការសម្តែងរបាំអប្សរាមែនទេ? / បដិសេធ៖ ខ្ញុំមិនចូលចិត្តកន្លែងអង្គុយទេ ប៉ុន្តែការរាំគឺស្រស់ស្អាតណាស់។
