Lesson Summary & Review
Let's review the key concepts covered in the interactive module above to ensure you are ready for your next meal out.
Core Vocabulary
- Rice: Small white or brown grains that we boil and eat. (Example: "I would like a plate of rice.")
- Water: A clear liquid that you drink. (Example: "Can I have a glass of cold water?")
- Menu: A list of the food that you can order at a restaurant.
- Bill: A piece of paper that shows how much money you must pay at the end of your meal.
Cultural Context: Asking "Did you eat?"
Translating local phrases directly into English can sometimes cause confusion. In Cambodia, the phrase "Nham bai" literally translates to "eat rice", but it is used as a general greeting to ask if someone has eaten a meal.
In English, if you ask "Did you eat rice?", the person will think you are asking specifically if they consumed the white grain. To ask the question naturally in English, simply ask, "Did you eat?" or "Have you had lunch?".
Essential Phrases for the Restaurant
To start your meal, you will need to ask the waiter to see what food is available. Say, "Could you bring the menu, please?"
When you have finished eating and are ready to pay, catch the waiter's attention and ask, "The bill, please." Remember to always be polite and say "please" when making requests!
