Study Habit Vocabulary

Noun

Do not just look at English words quietly.

To truly learn and remember English words, you must train your mouth muscles to produce the sounds. Reading quietly in your head will not help your speaking fluency.

Strategy Review: The Silent Reading Trap

One of the most common mistakes new language learners make is reading vocabulary quietly to themselves. While this might help you recognize a word on a piece of paper, it does not train your mouth to pronounce the word, and it does not help you retrieve the word quickly in a real conversation.

To fix this, you must build the habit of speaking out loud. Whenever you learn a new word using a flashcard or write it in your notebook, make sure you repeat the word out loud so you can practice your pronunciation.
