Welcome! When my students in Battambang go to the market, they buy many different things. Sometimes we can count these things exactly (like "two mangoes"), and sometimes we can't (like "water"). Knowing the difference between Countable and Uncountable nouns is the secret to using grammar correctly!

warning Common Mistake
In Khmer, we don't change nouns to show plural, and we often use counter words for everything. In English, you cannot add an 's' to uncountable nouns. We say "I drink water", never "I drink waters".

Mango
A fleshy, yellowish-red tropical fruit. You can count them (one mango, two mangoes).

Example: I bought three sweet mangoes from Phsar Boeung Chhouk.

Motorbike
A two-wheeled vehicle driven by an engine. You can count them.
ម៉ូតូ - យានជំនិះមានកង់ពីរ។ អ្នកអាចរាប់វាបាន។
Example: There are five motorbikes parked outside the coffee shop.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ មានម៉ូតូប្រាំគ្រឿងចតនៅខាងក្រៅហាងកាហ្វេ។

Tourist
A person who is traveling or visiting a place for pleasure.
អ្នកទេសចរ - ជនដែលធ្វើដំណើរទស្សនាកម្សាន្ត។ អ្នកអាចរាប់ចំនួនពួកគេបាន។
Example: Many tourists visit the bat caves at Phnom Sampov every evening.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ភ្ញៀវទេសចរជាច្រើនមកទស្សនារូងប្រចៀវនៅភ្នំសំពៅជារៀងរាល់ល្ងាច។
Uncountable
Rice
Small white or brown grains eaten as food. You cannot count individual grains in English grammar.
បាយ / អង្ករ - គ្រាប់ធញ្ញជាតិសម្រាប់បរិភោគ។ នៅក្នុងវេយ្យាករណ៍អង់គ្លេស វារាប់មិនបានទេ។
Example: Cambodian people eat rice with almost every meal.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ប្រជាជនកម្ពុជាទទួលទានបាយស្ទើរតែគ្រប់ពេល។
Uncountable
Water
A liquid that forms the seas, lakes, rivers, and rain. Liquids are always uncountable.
ទឹក - អង្គធាតុរាវ។ អង្គធាតុរាវតែងតែជានាមរាប់មិនបាន។
Example: Please drink plenty of water when you explore the temples in the heat.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ សូមពិសាទឹកឱ្យបានច្រើននៅពេលអ្នករុករកប្រាសាទនារដូវក្តៅ។
Uncountable
Traffic
Vehicles moving on a public highway. This refers to the whole concept, so it is uncountable.
ចរាចរណ៍ - យានជំនិះធ្វើចរាចរណ៍លើដងផ្លូវ។ វារាប់មិនបានទេ។
Example: The traffic near the central market is very busy in the morning.
ឧទាហរណ៍៖ ចរាចរណ៍នៅក្បែរផ្សារធំគឺមមាញឹកខ្លាំងណាស់នៅពេលព្រឹក។
