Lesson Summary & Review

Let's review the key concepts covered in the interactive module above to ensure you are ready to talk about your family and relationships.

The In-Law Rule

When you get married, your spouse's family becomes your family "by law". We add "-in-law" to the end of the standard family words (with hyphens!). For example, your husband's mother becomes your Mother-in-law, and your wife's brother becomes your Brother-in-law.

Family Idioms

Native speakers love using family-related idioms. Remember, these are not meant to be taken literally!

  • Blood is thicker than water: Family relationships are always more important than friendships.
  • Like father, like son: A son acts exactly like his dad.
  • Black sheep: Someone who is very different from the rest of their family (usually in a negative way).
