Transport Brief: Getting Around the Capital City
Traffic in Phnom Penh can seem chaotic to newcomers, but there are several distinct ways to navigate the city. The most iconic option is the tuk-tuk. There are two types: the traditional carriage pulled by a motorbike, and the modern, smaller "rickshaw" style running on LPG gas.
In recent years, ride-hailing apps like PassApp and Grab have revolutionized transport. These are very popular because the price is fixed on the phone before the ride begins. This means passengers do not need to negotiate with drivers, which avoids confusion and language barriers.
For solo travelers in a hurry, motorbike taxis (motodops) are the fastest option, weaving quickly through traffic. However, they can be risky for tourists unused to the driving style. Finally, the city bus system is the cheapest option, but it is often slow due to heavy traffic congestion.
