Test your ears: "Teen" (13) vs. "Ty" (30).
Lesson Goal: Learn to hear the subtle difference between similar-sounding numbers.
The Tricky "Teen" vs "Ty"
Hearing the difference between numbers like 13 and 30 or 14 and 40 can be very difficult for English learners! However, it is an essential skill. Mishearing a number could mean paying $30 instead of $13!
The trick is to listen for the stress in the word:
- For "-teen" numbers (13-19), the stress is usually on the second syllable: thir-TEEN. The "n" sound at the end is also very clear.
- For "-ty" numbers (20, 30, 40...), the stress is heavily on the first syllable: THIR-ty. The end is short and sharp.
