Lesson 48: Course Outline (Syllabus)

🎓 Academic Lab
Scanning

Reading a Syllabus

Scanning academic course documents for essential rules.

Lesson Goal: Learn to find grading policies, prerequisites, and schedules quickly in university documents.

The Student Survival Guide

When you start a new class at a university or college, the professor will give you a Syllabus. This document contains every rule and assignment for the entire semester.

A syllabus is usually very long, so students use scanning to find what they need. If you want to know how you will be graded, you scan the bold headings looking for the word Assessment or Grading. If you want to know what you are studying next week, you scan for the Schedule section.

Go to the next tab to learn the academic vocabulary, then practice scanning real syllabi in the Practice tab!
