Saying Goodbye

How to end a conversation politely.

Lesson Goal: Learn how to listen for the cues people use when they are ready to leave a conversation.

Ending a Conversation

When you finish talking to someone, it is considered rude to just turn around and walk away! You need to use polite phrases to signal that the conversation is ending.

When listening, pay attention to exit cues. These are phrases that mean "I need to go now," such as "Look at the time" or "I have to go."

After the exit cue, people will usually exchange a polite farewell, such as "Have a nice day" or "See you tomorrow."
