Taking a Taxi

Handling fares, traffic, and tipping.

Lesson Goal: Learn how to communicate effectively with a taxi or ride-share driver to reach your destination safely and correctly pay the fare.

Navigating the City

Taking a taxi in a new city can be intimidating. When you enter a taxi, the driver will usually ask "Where to?". You should reply clearly with your destination (e.g., "To the Grand Hotel, please.")

It is very important to ask the driver to use the meter to avoid being overcharged. If you are traveling during rush hour, the ride might take longer than expected!

When you arrive, look at the final fare. In many western countries, it is polite to leave a small tip (around 10-15%) for the driver's service.
