Vocabulary: Thematic & Topical Vocabulary (C1) - Lesson 2: Mastering Specialized Vocabulary (Your Interests & Field)

C1 - Lesson 2: Mastering Specialized Vocabulary

The Language of Your Field and Interests

At the C1 level, fluency means more than just discussing general topics. It means being able to communicate with precision and credibility within your specific area of expertise. Every professional field, academic domain3, or serious hobby has its own specialized1 vocabulary, often called jargon2. This lesson provides a clear strategy for you to identify, learn, and master the English vocabulary that is most important for your life and career.

A 4-Step Strategy for Mastery

Follow this process to become fluent in the language of your chosen field.

Step 1: Identify Your Domains

First, identify 2-3 key areas where you need advanced English. Be specific.

  • Professional: Your exact job title or industry (e.g., Logistics Management, Primary Education, Civil Engineering).
  • Academic: Your field of study (e.g., International Law, Environmental Science, Economics).
  • Personal Interest: A serious hobby (e.g., Digital Photography, Cryptocurrency, Modern Art).
  • Example: A university student in Kampot might choose "Sustainable Agriculture" as their academic domain and "Independent Filmmaking" as their personal interest.
Step 2: Find Authentic Materials

To learn the real language of a field, you must go to the source. Find materials created by and for professionals in that domain.

  • Industry Websites & Blogs: Search for top blogs or news sites in your field (e.g., "Top Marketing Blogs").
  • Professional Journals: Use Google Scholar to find academic papers on your topic.
  • Expert Podcasts & YouTube Channels: Listen to interviews with leaders in your industry.
Step 3: Actively Collect & "Deep Learn"

As you read and listen, become a collector of specialized terms. Use the "deep learning" method from our previous module for each new term:

  1. Record the term.
  2. Define it in English, in your own words.
  3. Write down the original sentence where you found it.
  4. Write your own new sentence using the term.
Step 4: Use It to Own It

Vocabulary that stays in a notebook will be forgotten. You must activate it.

  • Write: Write a short summary of an article you read, using 3-4 new specialized terms you learned from it.
  • Speak: Prepare to talk about a recent development in your field for 2 minutes. Intentionally include your new vocabulary. You can practice with a study partner or record yourself.

Case Study: Dara, The Marketing Professional

Dara works in marketing for hotels in Cambodia. He identifies "Digital Marketing for Hospitality" as his professional domain.

  • Step 1 (Identify): His domain is clear.
  • Step 2 (Find Materials): He starts reading the "Skift" travel industry news website.
  • Step 3 (Collect & Learn): He finds the term "customer acquisition cost" (CAC). He creates a notebook entry: "CAC: The total cost of sales and marketing to acquire a new customer. The article said, 'Lowering their CAC is a key goal for hotels.' My sentence: We need to analyze our Facebook ad spending to calculate our current CAC."
  • Step 4 (Use): In his next team meeting, he presents his analysis and says, "I believe we can lower our customer acquisition cost by focusing more on organic social media engagement." He has successfully moved a new term into his active professional vocabulary.

edit Your Mission

  1. Define Your Domains: In your notebook, identify your #1 professional or academic domain. Then, identify one personal interest or hobby you are passionate about. This is the first step to focused learning.
  2. Find Your Source: Choose ONE of your domains. Spend 20 minutes online to find one high-quality, authentic source of information about it in English (a blog, a professional organization's website, a YouTube channel, etc.). Bookmark it.
  3. Collect Your First Term: Read or watch your source for 15 minutes. Your mission is to find and collect ONE key piece of jargon. Create a "deep learning" entry for this term in your vocabulary notebook, including the term, its definition, the sentence you found it in, and your own original sentence.
