Adverbs of Degree

កម្រិតនៃគុណនាម និងកិរិយាសព្ទវិសេស

These words tell us how much or to what extent something happens or is.

វាប្រាប់យើងអំពី "កម្រិត" នៃគុណនាម ឬសកម្មភាពណាមួយ (very, really, quite, too, enough)។

The Basics ⭐

កម្រិតមូលដ្ឋាន (Very, Really, Quite)

These go BEFORE the adjective or adverb.

very / really / quite + Adjective

It is very strong. វាខ្លាំងណាស់។

She runs really fast. នាងរត់លឿនមែនទែន។

The "Too" Problem 🛑

ការប្រើប្រាស់ពាក្យ "Too"

"Too" usually has a negative meaning. It means "more than you want or need".

Too + Adjective

"Too hot" = I cannot drink it.

The coffee is too hot. កាហ្វេនេះក្តៅពេក (មិនអាចញ៉ាំបានទេ)។

The shoes are too small. ស្បែកជើងនេះតូចពេក (ពាក់មិនត្រូវទេ)។

The "Enough" Rule ✅

ទីតាំងរបស់ពាក្យ "Enough"

"Enough" means sufficient (ល្មម / គ្រប់គ្រាន់). Its position is tricky!

Adjective + enough

✅ tall enough (NOT enough tall)

enough + Noun

✅ enough money (NOT money enough)

Very vs. Too ⚠️

They both translate to "ណាស់"!

(ប្រយ័ត្ន! ក្នុងភាសាខ្មែរយើងអាចប្រើពាក្យ "ណាស់" សម្រាប់ទាំងពីរ ប៉ុន្តែក្នុងភាសាអង់គ្លេសវាមានន័យខុសគ្នា។)

Very = High degree (Can be good)

"The soup is very hot."
(ស៊ុបក្តៅណាស់ តែខ្ញុំចូលចិត្តញ៉ាំក្តៅៗ អត់អីទេ!)

Too = Excessive (Bad/Cannot do)

"The soup is too hot."
(ស៊ុបក្តៅពេក ក្តៅខ្លាំងរហូតដល់ញ៉ាំមិនកើត!)

Hi Rotha! In English, usually, we say "I am very happy" or "really happy". We use "too" for negative things, or when something stops us from doing an action (like "I am too tired to work"). 🏗️
