💡 Lesson 2: Basic Phrasal Verbs - Daily Routines
Today we are learning about phrasal verbs1. These are very common in everyday English conversation. A phrasal verb is a verb combined with a particle2 (a small word like up, on, off, out) to create a new meaning. Often, the meaning is completely different from the original verb.
Let's start by learning a group of phrasal verbs related to our daily routine3.
Common Daily Routine Phrasal Verbs
- wake up: to stop sleeping.
Example: "My alarm clock rings at 6 AM, so I wake up then." - get up: to get out of your bed.
Example: "I wake up at 6 AM, but I'm lazy, so I don't get up until 6:15 AM." - put on: to place clothes on your body.
Example: "After my shower, I put on my work uniform." - take off: to remove clothes.
Example: "When I get home from work, I take off my formal shoes." - go out: to leave your home for a social event.
Example: "My friends and I often go out for dinner in Battambang on the weekend." - come back: to return.
Example: "I leave for university at 7:30 AM and come back home at 4:00 PM."
Separable Phrasal Verbs
Some phrasal verbs, like 'put on' and 'take off', are separable4. This means you can put the object in the middle of the verb and the particle.
Both are correct:
"She put on her hat."
"She put her hat on."
IMPORTANT RULE: If the object is a pronoun5 (it, them, him, her), it MUST go in the middle.
Correct: "Here is your jacket. Put it on."
Incorrect: "Put on it."
