We use because to give a reason. It answers the question "Why?".

No, you cannot! "Because" is followed by a full sentence (Subject + Verb). "Because of" is followed by just a noun.

It is 100% perfectly fine to start a sentence with "Because" (Look at Structure 2 in the Learn tab!). Your teacher probably meant you shouldn't write "Because I was sick." as a full sentence and put a full stop. It needs the second part (the main clause) to be complete! auto_awesome
Why do we say "Because... so..." in Khmer but not in English?
Languages have different rules! In English, "Because" already connects the two ideas. Adding "so" is like gluing two pieces of paper together with glue AND tape. It's too much! Just use a comma. psychology
