✨ Lesson 1: Basic Sentence Order

Welcome to our new topic: Sentence Structure1! A sentence2 is a complete idea. In English, the word order3 is very important to make a clear sentence.

Today, we will learn the most basic and most important sentence order in English.

The Core of a Sentence: Subject + Verb

Every sentence needs at least two parts:

  • The Subject4: WHO or WHAT is doing the action.
  • The Verb: The ACTION or state of being.

Look at these very short sentences:

[I] [eat].

[She] [works].

[The boats] [move].

The Full Sentence: Subject + Verb + Object

To make our sentences more interesting, we often add an Object5. The object receives the action of the verb. It answers the question "what?" or "who?".

This is the most common sentence structure in English!

[Subject] + [Verb] + [Object].

[ WHO ] + [ DOES ] + [ WHAT ].

Let's look at some examples:

  • [I] [like] [Kampot pepper]. (WHO: I, DOES: like, WHAT: Kampot pepper)
  • [My mother] [cooks] [dinner]. (WHO: My mother, DOES: cooks, WHAT: dinner)
  • [The tourists] [buy] [souvenirs]. (WHO: The tourists, DOES: buy, WHAT: souvenirs)
