Tip: Click on many text parts to hear them read aloud! (Requires browser support for speech).
Hello Learners! 👋
We've learned about adjectives (describing words). Now, let's use them to write short descriptions! A description uses a few sentences to tell someone about a picture or an object.
In this lesson, you will:
- See examples of short descriptions.
- Practice putting descriptive sentences in a good order.
- Complete a short description by filling in blanks.
- Write your own 2-3 sentences to describe a familiar object or picture.
What is a Short Description?
A short description uses 2 or 3 sentences to give information about what something looks like, or what it is.
When you describe something, you can tell about its:
- Color: (e.g., The apple is red.)
- Size: (e.g., It is a big elephant.)
- Shape: (e.g., The ball is round.)
- What it does (if it's an animal or thing): (e.g., My dog likes to play.)
Example: Description of "My School Bag"
I have a school bag.
It is blue and big.
I put my books and pencils in it.
Example: Description of a Picture (e.g., a sunny park)
(User: Insert an image of a 'sunny park' here.)
This is a picture of a park.
The sun is shining.
The grass is green, and there are tall trees.
Remember to use capital letters at the start of each sentence and a full stop (.) at the end.
Activity 1: Order the Descriptive Sentences
The sentences below describe something, but they are mixed up. Drag and drop them (or choose the correct order numbers) to make a good short description.
(Note: For this web page, true drag-and-drop is complex. We will simulate by asking you to type the sentences in the correct order or identify the order.)
Activity 2: Complete a Description
Look at the picture description. Fill in the blanks with words from the word bank to complete the short description.
Activity 3: Write Your Own Short Description
Choose one of the topics below (or think of your own familiar object). Write 2 or 3 sentences to describe it. Use adjectives!

✨ Tips for Writing Short Descriptions ✨
- Start General, Then Add Details: First say what it is, then add describing words. (e.g., "It is a ball. It is big and red.")
- Use Your Senses: What does it look like (color, size, shape)? What does it feel like (if you can touch it)?
- Simple Sentences: Use short, clear sentences with subjects, verbs, and adjectives.
- Stay on Topic: Make sure all your sentences are about the same picture or object.
- Check C.U.P.S.: Capitals, Understanding, Punctuation (full stops!), Spelling.
