Hello Learners! 👋
We know that adjectives are describing words. Today, we'll explore how to use simple adjectives to give more details about people, places, and things in our writing.
In this lesson, you will:
- Review what adjectives do.
- See examples of adjectives describing people, places, and things.
- Practice choosing and using adjectives in sentences.
Adjectives Make Writing More Interesting!
Adjectives help us paint a picture with words. They answer questions like "What kind?", "How does it look/feel?", "What color?", "What size?".
Describing People
We use adjectives to describe what people are like or how they look.
- a tall man
- a happy baby
- My teacher is kind.
- He is a friendly boy.
Describing Places
Adjectives can tell us more about places.
- a big city
- a quiet room
- The park is beautiful.
- It is a sunny beach.
Describing Things
We use adjectives to give details about objects and animals.
- a red apple
- a small cat
- My book is new.
- The car is fast.
Remember Placement: Adjectives usually come before the noun (e.g., a blue sky) or after a "be" verb (e.g., The sky is blue).
Activity 1: Choose the Best Adjective
Read the sentence part. Choose the best adjective from the list to describe the noun.
Activity 2: Describe the Picture (Complete the Sentence)
Imagine the picture described. Choose an adjective from the list to complete the sentence about it.
Activity 3: Write Your Own Descriptive Sentences
Write a simple sentence to describe each item. Use at least one adjective. Remember capital letters and full stops!
✨ Tips for Using Descriptive Adjectives ✨
- Use Your Senses: Think about how something looks (color, size, shape), feels (soft, hard), sounds (loud, quiet), smells, or tastes. Many of these words are adjectives!
- One or Two is Good: For A2, using one or two adjectives to describe something is great. (e.g., "a small, brown dog")
- Build Your Word Bank: Learn new adjectives for colors, sizes, shapes, and feelings.
Wonderful Descriptions! 🎉
You are getting better at using adjectives to describe people, places, and things. This makes your writing much more vivid and fun to read!
