Speaking: Pronunciation C1 - Lesson 1: Refining Connected Speech for Natural, Native-like Flow

Speaking C1 Mastery
🌊

Connected Speech

ការបញ្ចេញសំឡេងតភ្ជាប់គ្នា (លំហូរដូចជនជាតិដើម)

Native speakers don't say words individually. They link, change, and drop sounds to make speech flow like water.

ជនជាតិដើមនិយាយភាសាអង់គ្លេសមិនកាត់ពាក្យមួយៗទេ។ ពួកគេភ្ជាប់ បំប្លែង និងលុបសំឡេងខ្លះចោល ដើម្បីឲ្យការនិយាយមានលំហូររលូន។
🔗

Catenation (Linking)

ព្យញ្ជនៈ ទៅ ស្រៈ (Consonant to Vowel)
The Rule: When a word ends in a consonant and the next begins with a vowel, the consonant moves over.
an apple a-napple /əˈnæpəl/
ផ្លែប៉ោមមួយ
stop it sto-pit /ˈstɒpɪt/
ឈប់ធ្វើវាទៅ
🔄

Assimilation

ការបំប្លែងសំឡេង (Sounds Changing)
The Rule: When t or d meets y, they blend into a new sound (/tʃ/ or /dʒ/).
Don't you? Doncha? /ˈdəʊntʃə/
តើអ្នកមិន...?
Did you? Didja? /ˈdɪdʒə/
តើអ្នកបាន...?
✂️

Elision

ការលុបសំឡេង (Dropping Sounds)
The Rule: We often drop complex consonant sounds (usually /t/ or /d/) when surrounded by other consonants to speak faster.
Next door Nex-door /nɛks ˈdɔːr/
ផ្ទះក្បែរខាង (លុបសំឡេង t)
Must be Mus-be /mʌs bi/
ច្បាស់ជា (លុបសំឡេង t)

Intrusion

ការបន្ថែមសំឡេង (Adding Sounds: /w/, /j/)
The Rule: When a vowel meets a vowel, we naturally insert a hidden /w/ or /j/ (y-sound) to glide between them.
Go away Go-w-away /ɡoʊ w əˈweɪ/
ទៅអោយឆ្ងាយ (បន្ថែមសំឡេង w)
See it See-y-it /siː j ɪt/
ឃើញវា (បន្ថែមសំឡេង y/j)
The Over-Enunciation Trap!

Don't sound like a robot! 🤖

(ការប្រឹងបញ្ចេញសំឡេងមួយពាក្យៗឲ្យច្បាស់ពេក ធ្វើឲ្យការនិយាយស្តាប់ទៅមិនដូចធម្មជាតិ និងរឹងកំព្រឹស។)
"I. want. to. go. out."
(Robotic / Unnatural) ❌
"I wanna gowout."
(Fluid / Native-like) ✔️

Assimilation (t + y)
In fast speech, "Don't you" sounds like:
(ពេលនិយាយលឿន "Don't you" ស្តាប់ទៅដូចពាក្យអ្វី?)
✂️
Elision (Dropping sounds)
Which sound is dropped in "next door"?
(តើសំឡេងមួយណាត្រូវបានលុបចោលនៅក្នុងពាក្យ "next door"?)
Intrusion (Hidden sounds)
What hidden sound connects "Go out"? (Go ___ out)
(តើសំឡេងបង្កប់អ្វីដែលភ្ជាប់ពាក្យ "Go out"?)
FLUENCY TRAP! ❌
If you pronounce every single letter perfectly, how will you sound?
(ប្រសិនបើអ្នកប្រឹងបញ្ចេញសំឡេងគ្រប់អក្សរទាំងអស់ឲ្យច្បាស់ តើអ្នកនឹងស្តាប់ទៅដូចម្តេច?)

Teacher, I know a lot of vocabulary, but I still can't understand movies without subtitles. They speak too fast!

Hi Minea! This is the #1 problem for advanced learners. It's not that they speak "fast," it's that they use Connected Speech. When they say "I am going to get it", it sounds like "I'm gonna geddit". If your brain is listening for the textbook words, you will miss it. Keep practicing the linking rules! 🌊🎙️
