Clarifying & Confirming

សុំការបញ្ជាក់ និងការផ្ទៀងផ្ទាត់ការយល់ដឹង

When you don't understand or hear something, you need polite phrases to ask again or check your understanding.

នៅពេលដែលអ្នកស្តាប់មិនឮ ឬមិនយល់ អ្នកត្រូវការឃ្លាគួរសមដើម្បីសួរម្តងទៀត ឬផ្ទៀងផ្ទាត់ថាតើអ្នកយល់បានត្រឹមត្រូវដែរឬទេ។
👂

1. Asking to Repeat

នៅពេលអ្នកស្តាប់មិនសូវឮច្បាស់
Sorry, I didn't catch that. សុំទោស ខ្ញុំស្តាប់អត់ទាន់ទេ។
Could you say that again, please? តើអ្នកអាចនិយាយម្តងទៀតបានទេ?
🤔

2. Asking for Meaning

នៅពេលអ្នកឮ តែមិនយល់អត្ថន័យ
What do you mean by that? តើអ្នកចង់មានន័យយ៉ាងម៉េចទៅវិញ?
Could you explain that a bit more? តើអ្នកអាចពន្យល់បន្ថែមបន្តិចបានទេ?

3. Confirming

ការផ្ទៀងផ្ទាត់ (ចង់ប្រាកដថាអ្នកយល់ត្រូវ)
So, you're saying that... អញ្ចឹង មានន័យថាអ្នកចង់និយាយថា...
If I understand correctly... ប្រសិនបើខ្ញុំយល់មិនខុសទេ...
The "What?" Trap! ⚠️

Never just say "What?" or "Huh?".

(ប្រយ័ត្ន! ការនិយាយត្រឹមពាក្យ "What?" ស្តាប់ទៅអត់មានសុជីវធម៌ និងអាចធ្វើឲ្យគេខឹងបាន។)
What? ❌
Sorry? / Pardon? ✅

Quick Check ⚡

ការត្រួតពិនិត្យរហ័ស
Missing a word

You didn't hear the last word the person said.

Sorry, I didn't ___ that.
(សុំទោស ខ្ញុំស្តាប់អត់ទាន់ទេ។)
Checking Understanding
So, what you ___ is we should leave early?
(អញ្ចឹង អ្វីដែលអ្នកចង់មានន័យគឺយើងគួរតែចេញដំណើរពីព្រលឹមមែនទេ?)
POLITENESS TRAP! ❌

You didn't understand the teacher.

(អ្នកស្តាប់គ្រូមិនយល់។ តើអ្នកគួរនិយាយមួយណា?)
Function Check
"If I understand correctly..." is used to:
តើគេប្រើឃ្លានេះដើម្បីអ្វី?

Teacher, can I say "Pardon?" instead of "Sorry?" when I don't hear something?

Yes, absolutely! "Pardon?" or "I beg your pardon?" is very polite and very common, especially in British English. It is a great alternative to "Sorry?". 🇬🇧

What is the difference between "I didn't catch that" and "I don't understand"?

"I didn't catch that" means you literally didn't hear the words clearly (maybe they spoke too softly or too fast). "I don't understand" means you heard the words perfectly fine, but the *meaning* is confusing to you. 💡

Is it okay to just say "Say again?"

It is a bit informal and can sound slightly bossy or impatient. It is much better to add "Could you..." to make it polite: "Could you say that again, please?" 🌟
