Speaking: Grammar in Speaking C1 - Lesson 4: Using Ellipsis & Substitution for Naturalness

Speaking C1
🗣️✂️

Speak Like a Native

ការលុបពាក្យ និងការប្រើពាក្យជំនួស

To speak fluently at a C1 level, we drop unnecessary words (Ellipsis) and replace repetitive ones (Substitution).

ជនជាតិដើមនិយាយអង់គ្លេសមិនសូវរំលឹកពាក្យដដែលៗទេ។ ពួកគេចូលចិត្តលុបវាចោល ឬប្រើពាក្យខ្លីៗមកជំនួស!
✂️

Ellipsis (Leaving words out) ✂️

ការលុបពាក្យដែលគេយល់ន័យរួចហើយចោល
Q: Are you going to the party? A: I might go to the party. ➔ I might. សំណួរ: តើអ្នកទៅកម្មវិធីជប់លៀងទេ?
ចម្លើយ: ខ្ញុំអាចនឹងទៅ។
I wanted to buy it, but I didn't have enough money to buy it. ➔ ...but I didn't have enough. ខ្ញុំចង់ទិញវាណាស់ តែខ្ញុំអត់មានលុយគ្រប់គ្រាន់។
🔄

Substitution with "So" & "Not"

ការប្រើពាក្យជំនួសប្រយោគទាំងមូល

Use with verbs of thinking: think, hope, believe, guess, suppose.

Q: Is it raining outside? A: I think so.
(= I think it is raining outside.)
សំណួរ: ខាងក្រៅភ្លៀងមែន?
ចម្លើយ: ខ្ញុំគិតអញ្ចឹង។ (វិជ្ជមាន)
Q: Will we be late? A: I hope not.
(= I hope we will not be late.)
សំណួរ: យើងនឹងយឺតទេដឹង?
ចម្លើយ: សង្ឃឹមថាមិនអញ្ចឹងទេ។ (អវិជ្ជមាន)
🪞

Substitution with Auxiliaries

ការប្រើកិរិយាសព្ទជំនួយ (do/does/did/can/will) ដើម្បីកុំឲ្យជាន់ពាក្យ
Instead of: She speaks French fluently, and her brother speaks French fluently too. Say: She speaks French fluently, and so does her brother. នាងនិយាយបារាំងបានយ៉ាងស្ទាត់ ហើយបងប្រុសរបស់នាងក៏អញ្ចឹងដែរ។
Instead of: He didn't finish the report, but I finished the report. Say: He didn't finish the report, but I did. គាត់ធ្វើរបាយការណ៍មិនទាន់ចប់ទេ តែខ្ញុំធ្វើចប់ហើយ។
The Ambiguity Trap! ⚠️

Don't over-omit!

(កុំលុបពាក្យចោលទាល់តែគេស្តាប់លែងយល់! ត្រូវប្រាកដថាអត្ថន័យច្បាស់លាស់ពីបរិបទ។)
Too much missing: ❌
"I gave John a book and Mary."
(Did you give Mary to John? Or did you give a book to Mary?)
Clear Ellipsis: ✔️
"I gave John a book, and to Mary too."
🗣️

In Action 🗣️

ការសន្ទនាជាក់ស្តែងដោយប្រើ Ellipsis & Substitution
A
Did you finish the report? តើអ្នកធ្វើរបាយការណ៍ចប់ហើយឬនៅ?
B
I haven't yet, but I will. ខ្ញុំមិនទាន់ធ្វើចប់ទេ តែខ្ញុំនឹងធ្វើវាឲ្យចប់។ (លុប finish the report)
A
Do you think the boss is angry? តើអ្នកគិតថាមេខឹងទេ?
B
I hope not. ខ្ញុំសង្ឃឹមថាមិនខឹងទេ។ (ជំនួស he is not angry)

Teacher, can I use "it" instead of "so"? Like "I think it" instead of "I think so"?

No! That is a very common mistake. With mental verbs like *think, hope, guess*, and *believe*, we MUST use "so" (for positive) and "not" (for negative) to substitute a whole idea or clause. Saying "I think it" sounds very unnatural to a native speaker. Stick to "I think so"! 🧠💡
