Speaking: Grammar in Speaking B2 - Lesson 3: Using Reported Speech (Statements, Questions, Commands)

Grammar Speaking B2
🗣️

Reported Speech

ការយកសម្តីគេមកនិយាយប្រាប់បន្ត

When we tell someone what another person said, we must shift the tense backwards.

នៅពេលដែលយើងយកសម្តីអ្នកណាម្នាក់មកនិយាយប្រាប់អ្នកផ្សេងបន្ត យើងត្រូវតែប្តូរកាល (Tense) ទៅជាអតីតកាលមួយកម្រិត។

Say VS Tell Trap! ⚠️

"Tell" needs a person!

(ពាក្យ Say មិនត្រូវការកម្មបទ(អ្នកស្តាប់)ទេ តែពាក្យ Tell ត្រូវតែមានកម្មបទមកទទួលជានិច្ច!)
He said me that he was tired. ❌
(No 'me' after 'said')
He told me that he was tired. ⭐
OR: He said that he was tired.
Question Order Trap! ⚠️

It's not a question anymore!

(នៅពេលយើងយករឿងគេមកប្រាប់បន្ត វាលែងជាប្រយោគសំណួរទៀតហើយ ដូច្នេះត្រូវរៀបពាក្យតាមលំដាប់ធម្មតា Subject + Verb)
He asked what did I want. ❌

Teacher, do I always have to backshift the tense? What if my friend says "Kampot is beautiful" and it is STILL beautiful now?

That is a brilliant question, Sokha! You are right! If the information is a general fact or is STILL TRUE right now, you DO NOT have to shift the tense backwards. You can say: "He said Kampot IS beautiful." However, saying "He said Kampot was beautiful" is also grammatically correct in reported speech. Great job! 🏞️
