Being polite is incredibly important in English! We use specific structures to ask for things, suggest ideas, and offer help without sounding rude.

Would you mind helping me fix this bicycle? Form: Would you mind + Verb-ing តើអ្នកប្រកាន់ទេប្រសិនបើជួយជួសជុលកង់នេះឱ្យខ្ញុំ?

Can I have the booking details, please? Form: Can I have + Noun + please តើខ្ញុំអាចសុំព័ត៌មានលម្អិតនៃការកក់បានទេ?

May I borrow your pen for a moment? Form: May I + Verb (Very formal) តើខ្ញុំអាចខ្ចីប៊ិចរបស់អ្នកមួយភ្លែតបានទេ?

I suggest we offer a discount for groups. Form: I suggest we + Verb ខ្ញុំស្នើឱ្យយើងផ្តល់ការបញ្ចុះតម្លៃសម្រាប់ភ្ញៀវជាក្រុម។

Let's try the local food for lunch! Form: Let's + Verb តោះសាកល្បងម្ហូបក្នុងតំបន់សម្រាប់អាហារថ្ងៃត្រង់!

Can I carry that bag for you? Form: Can I + Verb + for you តើឱ្យខ្ញុំជួយកាន់កាបូបនោះជូនអ្នកទេ?

I will book the tickets if you like. Form: I will + Verb + if you like ខ្ញុំនឹងកក់សំបុត្រប្រសិនបើអ្នកចង់។

Do you need any help with that map? Form: Do you need any help with + Noun តើអ្នកត្រូវការជំនួយមើលផែនទីនោះទេ?

The Politeness Trap!

Saying "I want" to a customer or colleague can sound demanding and rude!

(ការនិយាយថា "I want" ទៅកាន់ភ្ញៀវ ឬមិត្តរួមការងារ អាចស្តាប់ទៅដូចជាការបញ្ជា និងអត់គួរសម!)

"I want a coffee."
Too direct! (ស្តាប់ទៅរឹងពេក)

"I would like a coffee, please."
Polite and professional! (គួរសម និងមានវិជ្ជាជីវៈ)

Be careful here! Because they are asking if you "mind" (ប្រកាន់ទេ), you actually have to say "No" to help them! The best answer is: "No, not at all!" or "No, of course not!" 🤝

Excellent question! The verb "suggest" is always followed by an -ing verb or a clause. So you must say: "I suggest going" OR "I suggest that we go". Never use "to go" after suggest! 📝

What is the difference between "Can you help me?" and "Could you help me?"

Both are polite requests, but "Could you" is slightly softer and more polite. It is a great choice when asking a manager or a customer for help! 🌟
