Speaking: Fluency & Coherence C2 - Lesson 4: Masterful Use of Pacing, Pauses & Emphasis for Impact

Speaking C2: Impact
🎭

The Power of Silence

At C2, it is not just about what you say, but how you say it.

⏱️

Pacing (Speed) ⏱️

Rule: Change your speaking speed to match your message. Do not speak at one flat speed.

Fast Pacing ⚡ Use to show excitement, urgency, or passion.
Slow Pacing 🐢 Use to emphasize importance, seriousness, or to ensure complete understanding.
⏸️

Strategic Pauses ⏸️

The Dramatic Pause [...] Pausing right BEFORE an important word to build suspense. "And the winner is [...] Sopheak!"
The Processing Pause [...] Pausing AFTER a complex point to let the audience think. "This changes everything. [...] What will we do next?"
🎯

Sentence Stress 🎯

Rule: In English, stressing a different word in the EXACT same sentence changes the hidden meaning.

"I didn't say he stole the money."
"I didn't SAY he stole the money."
"I didn't say HE stole the money."
The Speed Trap!

Fast speaking does NOT equal fluency!

Speaking too fast makes you sound nervous and makes it hard for the listener to understand you. C2 speakers know how to control their pace and use pauses to sound confident and authoritative.

Quick Check ⚡

Concept Check
What is the main purpose of "Slow Pacing"?
The Dramatic Pause
Where should you place a pause to build suspense?
THE SPEED TRAP! ❌
Does speaking extremely fast mean you have C2 fluency?
Meaning Shift
If I say: "I didn't say YOU made a mistake", what does it mean?
Definition Match

I always speak fast when I'm nervous, especially in IELTS speaking. How do I stop?

Hi Sovan! It's natural to speed up when nervous. You need to practice the "power pause". When you finish a sentence, force yourself to close your mouth and breathe for 1 second. Silence feels much longer to YOU than it does to the listener. 🧘‍♂️

Usually, we don't emphasize "grammar words" like 'a', 'the', 'of', 'and' UNLESS we are trying to clarify a specific point. For example, you wouldn't stress 'the', unless you are saying: "He isn't just A doctor, he is THE doctor." 💡

What's the difference between a pause and hesitation?

A pause is deliberate and powerful; you stop to let the listener think. Hesitation is when you are searching for words, usually filled with sounds like "um" or "uh". C2 speakers replace "um" with silence! 🤫
